A dose of Movicol is 1 sachet dissolved in 125 ml (1/4 pint) of water. Take this 1 – 3 times a day according to the severity of your constipation. Faecal impaction: Before you take Movicol for faecal impaction, it should be confirmed that you have this condition.
MOVICOL® usually takes 1 to 2 days to trigger the first bowel movement.
The dose is 8 sachets a day taken within 6 hours. You may need to take this dose for up to 3 days. If you have a heart condition do not take more than two sachets in any one hour.
Because of the gentle, natural mode of action, it can take a day or so after starting MOVICOL before you have your first bowel movement. But it will be a predictable and comfortable one, in harmony with the way your body works.
What is the dosage recommended for MOVICOL? For adults the starting dose for a 'standard' episode of constipation is 1 sachet a day, and health professionals can adjust this dosage depending on the severity of constipation and the response as MOVICOL has a linear dose-response6.
MOVICOL® is a gentle and effective treatment for both chronic and occasional constipation. It has been available around the world for more than 20 years, and there are many clinical studies that prove its effectiveness and gentle mode of action.
It is recommended that you drink a glass of water or other fluid after you take Movicol Ready To Take. When taking Movicol Ready To Take you should continue to take plenty of fluids.
You can take MOVICOL® at any time of day that is convenient.
A course of treatment for faecal impaction with Movicol does not normally exceed 3 days. Adults, adolescents and the older people: 8 sachets daily, all of which should be consumed within a 6 hour period. Children (below 12 years old): Not recommended.
About macrogol Brand names: Movicol, Laxido, CosmoCol, Molaxole. Macrogol (or macrogols) is a laxative taken to treat constipation (difficulty pooing). You can also use it to help clear a build-up of hard poo in your bowel, which can happen if you've been constipated for a long time (faecal impaction).

Movicol powder
Movicol must be given with water. Choose an amount of water that your child can drink in one go. This amount must be at least 125 mL (about half a glass of water) per sachet for Movicol or at least 62.5 mL (about a quarter glass of water) for Movicol-Half or Movicol Paediatric Plain.
MOVICOL® has a natural mode of action that works gently, in harmony with your body. acts locally in the colon to relieve constipation: The water retained by MOVICOL® softens the stool and bulks it up slightly. As the stool gently expands, it naturally triggers colonic activity and a bowel movement.
The unusually slow passage of waste through the large intestine leads to chronic problems, such as constipation and uncontrollable soiling. There is no cure.
How long does it take to clear faecal impaction? After you start treatment, such as a laxative, a very watery poo should pass after 2-7 days. Do not carry on with treatment with laxatives for longer than 2 weeks, see your GP again.
In some circumstances, prolonged use may be necessary but should only be under medical supervision. If you take too much Movicol Flavour Free and get bad diarrhoea, stop taking Movicol Flavour Free until the diarrhoea stops. If constipation returns, you should check with your doctor or pharmacist.
Don't worry – soft stools mean MOVICOL® has started to work. However, if the poo becomes very runny or diarrhoea (see Stool Type 7 on the chart overleaf), you should stop taking your MOVICOL® until the runny poo stops. Then start again at a reduced dose.
Movicol is usually well tolerated although side effects such as abdominal pain & diarrhoea may occur either because of over treatment or because of overflow (see above). Other side effects include a rumbly tummy (borborygmi), nausea and vomiting. Abdominal distension,flatulence and ano-rectal pain may also occur.
Most people are able to have regular bowel movements within a few weeks. Some people will need to use laxatives along with bowel retraining. Your health care provider can tell you if you need to take laxatives and which ones are safe for you.
Movicol ready-to-take sachets
️ To treat constipation you can take two sachets up to three times a day, depending on how bad your constipation is.
At 2 PM, mix the 16 sachets of Movicol® with 2 L of a Sports Drink® (or another Page 5 sports drink or Pedialyte®. Do not mix with just plain water). Drink a full glass of this mixture every 15-20 minutes until the entire mixture is gone. It is important to drink the entire amount within 6 hours.
Adult sachets are for people from age 12 upwards and should be mixed with at least 125mls water PER SACHET. Empty the sachet of powder into a cup, glass, or bottle. Add the right amount of cold water and stir until the powder has dissolved and the water is clear.
