Your rank is based on how you went compared to other Year 12 students. The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a number between 0.00 and 99.95 that indicates a student's position relative to all the students in their age group (ie all 16 to 20 year olds in NSW). So, an ATAR of 80.00 means that you are 20 per cent from the top of your age group (not your Year 12 group).
But it's also determined by a complex scaling system that is beyond your control. An ATAR score of 60 doesn't mean you got 60 per cent as a grade. It actually means you're in the top 40 per cent of your year group. Similarly, an ATAR score of 90 means you're placed in the top 10 per cent of your year.
Complete year 12 prerequisites
The first pathway is only available to a very limited number of students (30 domestic and 10 international students) and requires applicants to achieve a band four in mathematics advanced (or equivalent) and gain an ATAR of 99.95 in the Higher School Certificate or equivalent.
The elusive 99.95 ATAR is something a lot of people strive for but few achieve. No matter what your goals are, it helps to learn from someone who's achieved a top ATAR before, if only to learn some useful tips and tricks from them.
For most people, a good ATAR score is 80.00.
