This medicine can be taken at any time with or without food or drink. Drink Movicol Ready To Take directly from the sachet. There is no need to dilute it with water. It is recommended that you drink a glass of water or other fluid after you take Movicol Ready To Take.
If you are taking Movicol for faecal impaction, it may be easier to dissolve 8 sachets in 1 litre of water. Drink plenty of water. Increase the fibre in your diet. Prolonged use of laxatives is undesirable and may lead to dependence.
Movicol must be given with water. Choose an amount of water that your child can drink in one go. This amount must be at least 125 mL (about half a glass of water) per sachet for Movicol or at least 62.5 mL (about a quarter glass of water) for Movicol-Half or Movicol Paediatric Plain.
Powder sachets
Dissolve each sachet in 125ml (one-quarter of a pint) of water, or 62.5ml (one-eighth of a pint) of water if you're giving paediatric sachets to a child. Stir well, then drink.

Macrogol laxatives work by 'binding with' water and delivering it to the large bowel. It is therefore essential to mix it with the correct amount of water or it will not work!
In these situations the medicine can help produce regular bowel movements. ️ When treating faecal impaction your doctor may ask you to take Movicol for up to three days. If you haven't had a bowel movement after this time you should see your doctor again.
HOW LONG WILL MOVICOL® TAKE TO WORK? Don't be concerned if MOVICOL® does not work immediately. MOVICOL® usually takes 1 to 2 days to trigger the first bowel movement.

Unlike some laxatives that work to cause bowel contractions through direct nerve stimulation, MOVICOL® has a natural mode of action that works gently, in harmony with your body. acts locally in the colon to relieve constipation: The water retained by MOVICOL® softens the stool and bulks it up slightly.
A dose of 8 sachets a day of Movicol Plain is needed for the treatment of faecal impaction. Each sachet dissolved in 125 ml (1/4 pint) of water. The 8 sachets should be taken within 6 hours for up to 3 days if required. If you have a heart condition, do not take more than 2 sachets in any one hour.
You can take MOVICOL® at any time of day that is convenient.
Don't worry – soft stools mean MOVICOL has started to work. However, if the poo becomes very runny or diarrhoea (see Stool Type 7 on the chart in this leaflet), you should stop taking your medicine until the runny poo stops. Then start again using fewer sachets.
Like all medicines, Movicol Lemon- Lime can have side effects. Sometimes people have indigestion, stomach ache or rumbles. You may also feel bloated, suffer from wind, feel sick or vomit, may also experience soreness of the anus (bottom) and may have mild diarrhoea when starting to take Movicol Lemon-Lime.
While taking bulk-forming or osmotic laxatives it's particularly important to stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. This is because these laxatives can cause dehydration.
Take the medication before or after meals. Pour the contents into a glass of water or you can add juice or squash (about 125ml or quarter of a pint). Stir well until the powder has dissolved and the solution is clear or slightly hazy, and then drink it. You must take the medicine as soon as possible after preparing it.
The daily number of sachets should be taken in divided doses, all taken within 12 hours (e.g. 8am – 8pm). Each sachet dissolved in 62.5 ml (1/4 of a glass) of water. Treatment can be stopped when the medicine has worked.
Sometimes people think that laxatives will help move their food through their body before the body absorbs any calories. So they may take laxatives after eating a big meal or binge eating. They think this helps lose weight or will stop them from gaining weight. This is not true.
Movicol helps you to have a comfortable bowel movement even if you have been constipated for a long time. Movicol also works in very bad constipation called faecal impaction. Do not take Movicol if your doctor has told you that you have: a blockage in your intestine (gut obstruction, ileus)
Duration of treatment: Constipation: Treatment with Movicol usually lasts for about 2 weeks. If you need to take Movicol for longer, please see your doctor.
There is no cure for slow transit constipation. Treatment options may include: medication to improve bowel motility. regular enemas to flush the rectum of faeces.
Dietary fibre is important as it helps to bulk and create soft stools that are easier to pass. Eating foods like fruits, vegetables and wholemeal bread can increase your daily intake of fibre.

The water retained by MOVICOL® softens the stool and bulks it up slightly. As the stool gently expands, it naturally triggers colonic activity and a bowel movement. Because of the lubricating effect of MOVICOL® and the rehydrated, softened, stool - the bowel movement feels comfortable.
Your stool becomes hard and dry. This makes it difficult to pass. Fecal impaction often occurs in people who have had constipation for a long time and have been using laxatives. The problem is even more likely when the laxatives are suddenly stopped.
