Stop taking Movicol and consult your doctor if you begin to feel weak, fatigued, breathless, very thirsty with a headache, or get swollen ankles. These symptoms may indicate that your fluid and electrolyte levels are disturbed and your doctor may need to take a blood test to check for this.
Unlike some laxatives on the market, Movicol is designed to give you more control over your bowel movements and is gentler that most products. Usually people find that Movicol takes effect around one to two days after taking it. The duration of the treatment for constipation may continue for up to two weeks.
Dietary fibre is important as it helps to bulk and create soft stools that are easier to pass. Eating foods like fruits, vegetables and wholemeal bread can increase your daily intake of fibre.

The water retained by MOVICOL® softens the stool and bulks it up slightly. As the stool gently expands, it naturally triggers colonic activity and a bowel movement. Because of the lubricating effect of MOVICOL® and the rehydrated, softened, stool - the bowel movement feels comfortable.
Each dose should be taken in or with a full glass (8 ounces) or more of cold water or fruit juice. This will provide enough liquid for the laxative to work properly. A second glass of water or juice by itself is often recommended with each dose for best effect and to avoid side effects.
MOVICOL® can be used by patients with renal insufficiency with no need to adjust the dose. The MOVICOL® range contains no sucrose (sugar). (Some varieties contain acesulfame potassium and/or sucralose, which are sweeteners not known to affect blood sugar).

Movicol is usually well tolerated although side effects such as abdominal pain & diarrhoea may occur either because of over treatment or because of overflow (see above). Other side effects include a rumbly tummy (borborygmi), nausea and vomiting. Abdominal distension, flatulence and ano-rectal pain may also occur.
The recommended dose of Movicol is 1 sachet a day. This can be increased to 2 or 3 sachets daily if necessary.

How do you know when faecal impaction has cleared? There may be small lumps of poo of any shade of brown if the treatment has been successful. If your child is suffering from faecal impaction, you can give them some sweetcorn. If it appears in your child's poo within 24 hours, the impaction has cleared.
MOVICOL® is a gentle and effective treatment for both chronic and occasional constipation.
You can mix Movicol with any drink, including warm drinks. Some children like it in jelly and yoghurts. There should be different flavour to select from - chocolate, vanilla.
When you have a fecal impaction, you'll need to have the hard mass of stool removed from your colon or rectum to get better. It won't go away on its own, and it can lead to death if it's allowed to worsen.
