How will I know if my blood clot fell out? If you develop dry sockets, the pain will let you know that your wound is no longer protected. Swelling is also an indication you have lost your blood clot, as is the taste of blood in your mouth.
A blood clot will form in the tooth socket after the extraction. The clot protects the bone during healing. If that blood clot gets loose or comes out of the socket, you may have a dry socket, which exposes the bone. A dry socket may last for several days and can cause severe pain.
After a tooth extraction, you should develop a blood clot in the socket (hole) that's left behind. It'll look like a dark-colored scab. But if you have a dry socket, the clot will be absent and you'll be able to see bone. For this reason, dry sockets usually appear white.
Blood Clots Protect the Wound
A blood clot will start to form right after your surgical procedure as blood cells called platelets clump together with a sticky protein called fibrin. This clotting can occur for the next 24 hours to stop the bleeding and protect your nerves and bone from infection and irritation.
The drawing action of sucking in, and the force applied when spitting, can dislodge the blood clot. Sneezing and coughing can also dislodge a blood clot. Hard or crunchy foods can displace the blood clot. Sticky foods can pull the protective clot right out of the socket.
Dry socket
It's where a blood clot fails to develop in the tooth socket, or if the blood clot becomes dislodged or disappears. This can happen 3 to 5 days after surgery. The empty socket causes an ache or throbbing pain in your gum or jaw, which can be intense like a toothache.
When the blood clot from the extraction site falls out prematurely (within the first 4 days after surgery), dry socket causes extreme pain that may radiate to the jaw, face, and ear. It also causes bad breath. The highest risk for this condition is between days 2-3 after tooth extraction.
Osteo-necrosis of the jaw (ONJ) has received a lot of attention in the dental world recently because it is largely misunderstood and has a debilitating impact on patients who get it. On the surface it can appear very similar to a dry socket, but it is much more serious and much more difficult to treat.
Because there is no blood clot formed, the area appears dry, empty and with a seemingly white or bone-like color. If food and bacteria have gotten into the socket, it can display different colors: yellow, green, or black. It is also possible for some patients not to see a clear dry socket. They will only see a hole.

Immediately Following Surgery
Limit talking. The more you talk, the more your tongue and associated muscles move disturbing the clots. Vigorous mouth rinsing or touching the wound area following surgery should be avoided. This may initiate bleeding by causing the blood clot that has formed to become dislodged.
72 hours - Your tooth's socket should be mostly healed and the bleeding should be mostly gone. Swelling will have subsided though you may still feel tender around the socket. Be careful not to dislodge your blood clot, which can lead to a dry socket. The gum tissue should be closing around the socket.

The white stuff that you might see forming around your tooth socket after a tooth extraction is called granulation tissue. This tissue is comprised of blood vessels, collagens and white blood cells, hence its white colour.

Unpleasant Taste. Another common symptom of a dry socket is a bad or sour taste in your mouth. This can be one of the first signs of infection, so don't let that smell linger without taking swift action.
