Acetone and methylated spirits are two different organic solutions. That is; the acetone is the simplest ketone, and it occurs as a colourless liquid having a high purity. On the other hand, the methylated spirits refer to ethanol containing methanol, which is poisonous to drink.
2 – Dry the nail
After each salt bath it helps to dry the nail. Firstly using a towel, then additionally using Betadine or Methylated Spirits. By drying the nail it improves the healing condition and reduces the risk of further infection.
Briefly, no. Acetone and mineral spirits are not the same, and should not be treated as if they are. Part of the confusion comes from the fact that both are used as thinners. Painters commonly use mineral spirits, for example, to thin the paint that they put into paint sprayers.
As you may guess now that you're an expert in paint thinners, you can use white spirit, turpentine and methylated spirit pretty much interchangeably. All of them are alternatives to each other.
Metho will remove most acrylic paints and is a good general purpose cleaner as well.
Hot, Soapy Water. Soap and water are another great way to remove acrylics without harsh chemicals or solvents. Simply fill a bowl or sink with hot, soapy water and soak your nails for about 10 minutes. Soaking will help soften the adhesive and make it quicker to remove the false nails.
If you don't have any acetone-free nail polish remover lying around, there's another substance you can use: cuticle oil. This method is perfect for nails that have already started to come off a bit. All you need is a bottle of cuticle oil and a Q-tip or cotton ball.
Rubbing alcohol is considered to be a “surgical spirit” rather than a “methylated spirit” since it is often used in medical environments. It consists of pure isopropyl alcohol or ethanol (most commonly isopropyl alcohol), usually at a concentration of 70% or 99%.
The most commonly used alcohol-based hand sanitisers are isopropyl alcohol or a form of denatured ethanol (i.e. industrial methylated spirits), normally at a 70% concentration.
Mineral turpentine is considered to have more solvency than methylated spirits. This means that it has the greater ability to dissolve with other solvents. Turpentine is considered to be more dangerous than methylated spirits as it is highly flammable and can irritate the skin and eyes.
Methyl acetate is a suitable substitute for acetone due to its lower environmental impact, reduced toxicity, and less flammable nature. It has similar solvency properties as acetone, making it effective in paint, coating, and adhesive production.
To remove your nails, you need to have: Pure acetone which you can purchase from professional salon retailers or hardware stores such as Bunnings.
Replacing acetone with similar solvents
In some industries, it's common to replace acetone with a very similar solvent, like methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) or ethyl acetate.
Methylated spirits is safe to use on glass, sinks, chrome taps, ceramic, stone, marble and grout. (Do not use on painted or varnished surfaces).
METHYLATED SPIRIT is a solvent for removing soilage, spots and stains from hard surfaces, including glass, which require fast, clear drying.
Methylated spirits applied once or twice a day (especially between the toes) can help dry the skin (don't use if the skin between your toes is broken). Moisture-wicking socks may help, or take an extra pair of socks to school or work to change over.
Commonly known as Denatured Alcohol, Ethanol (Ethyl Alcohol) is mixed with a small quantity of Methanol to make it unfit for consumption, and dyed purple.
If you haven't heard of rubbing alcohol before you've probably walked passed it in the supermarket aisle in Australia known as Isocol. Rubbing alcohol can be used to clean makeup, disinfect wounds, kill mealybugs and many more uses. Cleaning and disinfecting makeup brushes we recommend using 70% Isopropyl Alcohol.
Larger doses may cause severe intoxication, tremors, convulsions, drowsiness, blurred vision, coma, respiratory arrest, unconsciousness and death. Is it an offence to drink methylated spirits? Yes it is an offence.
Apart from the fact that methylated spirit delays wound healing and it may cause persistent bleeding, it also causes pain when used! (which is not ideal). The ideal care for small cuts is to clean with water and put a plaster which will prevent germs from gaining access to the wound.
It is an effective solvent in the paints, lacquers and varnish industry. You will also find that it is found in a lot of cosmetics such as toners and makeup brush cleaners. It can be used as a window cleaner, spray and wipe disinfectant, and a steriliser.
Methylated spirits is NOT toxic to skin (unlike lead, cadmium, ricin, etc).
