F is currently the 2nd lowest energy efficiency rating for a fridge freezer. It means the appliance has an Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) of between 65 and 80%. The EEI is calculated by assessing the appliance's annual energy consumption and dividing this by the standard annual energy consumption.
First introduced 20 years ago, energy labels awarded a product with an A for high efficiency, or an F for low efficiency and encouraged manufacturers to drive innovation by using more energy efficient technologies.
An F energy rating fridge freezer has an EEI (Energy Efficiency Index) of between 80% and 65%. To put it into perspective, the best energy-rated fridge freezer (an A-rating fridge freezer) has an EEI of less than 10%. B-rated fridge freezers have an EEI of between 10% to 20%.
Fridge freezers with an F or G rating are the least energy efficient on the market, but they are still 40% more energy efficient than those produced as little as a decade ago.
Every fridge and freezer sold today must have an energy-efficiency rating. As with tumble dryers and washing machines, the scale adopted in 2021 grades fridge freezers from A to G. A is the most efficient, while G is the least efficient. You may find that some retailers are still using the old scale, though.
Why should you care about energy efficiency? Though fridge freezers with higher energy ratings tend to be a bit more expensive, they cost less to power. Switching to an energy-efficient refrigerator can reduce your energy costs up to 50% and repay that initial investment in a few years.
The recommended freezer temperature to keep your food safe is at or below 0°F (-18°C), but your freezer may need to be set higher or lower depending on its environment and other factors. Star ratings indicate the energy efficiency of the product. The higher the star rating, the more energy efficient the product is. Star ratings vary from 1 star to 5 stars. While buying a refrigerator, one must carefully choose the star rating.
A is the best while G is the worst. Most chest freezers are rated as F. The rating scale for appliances changed in March 2021. In addition to the rating, most manufacturers quote the average annual electricity usage, measured in kilowatt hours (kWh).
How do energy labels work? Appliances are tested for how much energy they use during typical use. This gives them a rating on a scale of A to G, with A being the most efficient product of its class, and G being the least efficient. Some appliances use an older scale, from A+++ to G, with A+++ being the most efficient.
Let's look at that in terms of the average lifespan of a refrigerator, which is around 15 years. Over the course of 15 years, a 1970s era fridge would eat up about $3,960 in energy use. A 1990s era refrigerator would swallow $1,980 in energy use. A mid-2000s era refrigerator would eat up $1,080 in energy use.
The Energy Performance Certificate or EPC for short will rate the property in terms of energy efficiency from 0-100, with an A being (the best) to a G (the worst). So you can see an F rating is pretty poor.
If your property achieved an E EPC rating, it means it scored low on its energy performance and well below the recommended Energy Performance Certificate rating of C.
Energy Performance Certificates, or EPCs, are legally required when buying or renting a home. They tell you how energy efficient the property is, from A (very efficient) to G (very inefficient).
Historically, fridges with freezers on top or bottom tend to last the longest, and those from well-known refrigerator brands like Whirlpool and LG tend to top lists for most reliable. The fewer parts that can fail translates into a model that could potentially last longer and cost less to repair.
The good news is that home appliances, and refrigerators in particular, have become much more efficient over the years, costing people less and less. “Newer refrigerators use much less energy than their predecessors,” says Larry Ciufo, CR's test engineer for refrigerators.
This means that the vast majority of fridge freezers on the market currently have an energy rating of E or F. So, compared to other fridge freezers on the market today, those that receive an F or G rating are the least efficient.
