Treatment. There is no treatment available that will create a new eye or that will restore complete vision for those affected by anophthalmia or microphthalmia. A baby born with one of these conditions should be seen by a team of special eye doctors: An ophthalmologist, a doctor specially trained to care for eyes.
Inheritance. SOX2 anophthalmia syndrome is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, which means one copy of the altered gene in each cell is sufficient to cause the disorder. Most cases result from new mutations in the SOX2 gene and occur in people with no history of the disorder in their family.
Risk factors for anophthalmia include older maternal age (greater than 40), multiple births, low birth weight and prematurity. In utero risk factors include infections, maternal vitamin A deficiency, hyperthermia, and exposure to toxins such as warfarin and alcohol.
Anophthalmia and microphthalmia can cause vision problems and blindness. People with these conditions may also have small eye sockets (the bones around the eye). This can change the shape of their face.
Anophthalmia and microphthalmia can cause vision problems or blindness. Anophthalmia and microphthalmia are rare. About 1 in 5,300 babies are born with these conditions in the United States each year.
A diagnosis of anophthalmia can be made by two-dimensional ultrasonography when eyeballs and lens are absent. More information can now be gained with the advent of three-dimensional ultrasonography, especially when the fetal head position is unfavorable for two-dimensional ultrasound [2, 23].
Anophthalmia has been reported to be present in 3 out of every 100,000 births. Many instances of anophthalmia also occur with microphthalmia.
Nanophthalmos is a special subtype of microphthalmia, in which the eye, although small, has preserved functionality and organization (Figure 1) [13, 14]. It usually presents as a small hyperopic eye set into a deep orbit, with narrow palpebral fissures [15, 16].
In other words, blurry images lacked detail, thereby prompting the neural network to seek more information by enlarging the size of the receptive fields.
The estimated prevalence of microphthalmia and anophthalmia is 1 in 7000 and 1 in 30,000 live births, respectively [12]. The effect on vision is dependent on the severity, size of the eye and associated ocular malformations [9,10,11].
Anophthalmia plus syndrome (APS) is a very rare syndrome that involves malformations in multiple organs of the body. The most common findings in affected individuals are anophthalmia (absence of one or both eyes) or severe microphthalmia (abnormally small eyes), and cleft lip and/or cleft palate.
Vitamin A deficiency is the leading cause of preventable blindness in children. Our eyes needs vitamin A for several purposes, including to nourish and protect the cornea, which is the clear covering on the front of the eye.
A variety of causes can promote congenital blindness but the most concern and highest cause of it is a genetic mutation. In general, 60% of congenital blindness cases are contributed from prenatal stage and 40% are contributed from inherited disease.
Anophthalmia is the medical term for the absence of one or both eyes. Is a rare anomaly that occurs as a result of insults to the developing eye(s) during the first 8 weeks of life [1] The prevalence of congenital anophthalmia ranges from 3 to 14 per 100,000 population.
However, individuals with mildly affected facial features can have severe brain abnormalities. Some people do not have apparent structural brain abnormalities but have some of the facial features associated with this condition.
The fetal face can be seen in the middle of the screen. The head is tilted left toward the placenta, which can be seen as a mound in the left of the ultrasound image. Both eyes are visible, and the area of white within the eye is the lens. Other facial features, such as the nose and mouth, are also visible.

At age 3 to 5, a child with normal vision will be able to see as clearly as a typical adult, and by age 10, their visual system will be completely developed.
Important elements needed for brain and eye development are:
DHA and AA – long chain omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids that support IQ, vocabulary development, and visual acuity. Phospholipds – a type of fat that is found in the membranes of all cells and in myelin. It is essential for the functioning of brain cells.
Waardenburg anophthalmia syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder which is characterized by either microphthalmia or anophthalmia, osseous synostosis, ectrodactylism, polydactylism, and syndactylism.
When microphthalmia occurs as a feature of a genetic syndrome or chromosomal abnormality, it may cluster in families according to the inheritance pattern for that condition, which may be autosomal recessive or other patterns. Often microphthalmia is not inherited, and there is only one affected individual in a family.
Microphthalmia results from a vitamin A deficiency during gestation which produces under-developed eyes that are smaller than normal. In addition, the layer of tissue in the eye responsible for supplying blood and nutrients to the Retina, called the choroid layer, is affected.
Whether you are totally, legally, or partially blind, you may be eligible for the Social Security Administration's Disability benefits for the blind. In order to qualify, the SSA requires that your vision loss be quite significant and be present in both eyes. Those blind in one eye are not eligible.
And if I particularly talk about India, our country projects a very high number of blind people, which makes India – home to the largest blind population in the world.
Being reliant on one eye will not damage the good eye, though you may find it helpful to take regular breaks to prevent fatigue. The change to your vision and working through the adaptation phase will naturally cause frustration, however be assured you will adjust with time.
