While fats can worsen GERD symptoms, there are also healthy fats found in foods such as avocados, walnuts, and olive oil which can have beneficial effects. While they are still best consumed in moderation for GERD-sufferers, healthy fats may reduce inflammation and hunger.
Some other soft or liquid-‐type foods are applesauce, cooked cereals, strained cream soup, mashed potatoes, Jello, rice pudding, etc. Using a blender or food processor to puree your food may be helpful. Avoid foods that can irritate your throat: Spices such as pepper, chilies, chili powder, nutmeg, curry, cloves, etc.
Quitting smoking and limiting alcohol intake can help you cope with this condition. Poor eating and swallowing habits can also worsen symptoms of esophagitis. Instead of eating fast and swallowing big chunks of food, try taking small bites and chewing slowly and thoroughly.
FOODS TO AVOID
All breads and sweet breads; rolls, biscuits, cornbread, saltine and graham crackers, dressing or stuffing. Breads and crackers containing coarse whole grains, bran, nuts or seeds. Well cooked tender lean beef, veal, lamb, liver, fresh pork, fish, and poultry with gravy or sauce or in soups.
Eat healthy foods.
Healthy foods include fruits, vegetables, whole-grain breads, low-fat dairy products, beans, lean meats, and fish. Ask if you need to be on a special diet. You may need to eat foods that reduce stomach acid. Stomach acid can get into your esophagus and cause the varices to break open and bleed.
Esophagitis diet includes soft vegetables and vegetables, dairy products (provided you are not allergic to milk), cereals and crackers. While eating, chewing food completely, having small bites and swallowing slowly will also help with the pain.

When you have frequent GERD symptoms, like heartburn, eating high-fat dairy products like cheese can aggravate your symptoms. Yogurt that is low in fat is generally safe to eat for those who have GERD. You should avoid eating yogurt that contains whole fat rather than low amounts of fat. Whole fat yogurt can be harder for you to digest and might trigger GERD symptoms.
