Alma Madrigal is the main antagonist of Disney's 2021 animated feature film Encanto. She is the matriarch of the Madrigal family, the widow of Pedro, the mother of Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno and the grandmother of Isabela, Dolores, Luisa, Camilo, Mirabel, and Antonio.
Following his disappearance, it became taboo to mention Bruno, who was reviled as a villainous figure by the townsfolk until his deep-rooted love for his family was unearthed.
One such member, Bruno, voiced by John Leguizamo, was shunned from the family after his ability to see visions of the future caused misfortunes in the village.
In Encanto, the main antagonist of the film is Abuela Alma.
Contrary to many other Disney movies, Encanto doesn't have a villain. However, many fans consider Abuela Alma the closest option since her actions and expectations for her own family affect them all directly. Although she redeems herself by the end of the movie, Abuela Alma isn't likable before this.
The character appears to symbolize the stigma around mental health issues: While he is never labeled with a specific diagnosis in the film, some viewers have suggested that he has OCD or another type of neurodivergent brain function.
Bruno isn't just the voice of fear, but the fear of living. Bruno represents the fear of the imaginary unknown future you create in your head. When you're afraid of what bad things might happen to you, you start to control everything in your world, play it safe, and do what others expect of you.
Bruno has a few Autistic traits. In the movie, he developed the form of ritual based off of a combination of superstition and possibly sensory stimming. He would “knock knock knock on wood” all around him which is a way of asking for protection in many cultures from certain spirits.
Bruno also performed several other well-known behaviors meant to prevent bad luck, including throwing salt over his shoulder, avoiding stepping on cracks, and both holding his breath and crossing his fingers while passing through doorways.
The Soldiers are the overarching antagonists of Disney's 60th full-length animated feature film Encanto. They were a group of corrupt Colombian soldiers responsible for the death of Pedro Madrigal, the husband of Alma Madrigal and the grandfather of Mirabel Madrigal.
Bruno's tragic 10-year-old vision was not showing two possibilities like Mirabel thought. Instead, it was showing a magical before and after picture. Similar to modern before and after photos, the picture of Casita being shattered was revealed when Mirabel tilted the prophecy to the left.
Mirabel Madrigal is the main protagonist of the Disney film Encanto.
Te Fiti is a major character in Disney's 2016 animated feature film Moana. She is a goddess with the power to create life—an ability that she used to create the islands of Polynesia. After her heart had been stolen by Maui, she became Te Kā, a demon of earth and fire and the main antagonist of the film.
Alma Madrigal (often referred to as Abuela) is the deuteragonist of Disney's 2021 animated feature film, Encanto.
The fact that Dolores could hear Bruno all along, then, serves as a significant thematic tie-in. Dolores' awareness of Bruno isn't an Encanto plot hole – instead, it's an effective metaphor that bolsters the movie's emotional core.
Bruno was banished from the family's compound years ago by his own mother, Abuela Alma, the matriarch of the family, because the magical gift with which he was “blessed” had a clairvoyant component to it. So when Abuela began to fear Bruno's prophecies might take away her control over the family, she made him leave.
Powers and Abilities
Bruno having a vision. Bruno was gifted the power of precognition and is therefore able to see the future.
Renee is Pixar's first nonspeaking autistic character. Her voice actress, Madison Bandy, is also autistic and non-verbal. Renee is hypersensitive to sound.
And despite some fans' theories that “We Don't Talk About Bruno” — and the repeated reprimand “Silenzio, Bruno!” in the Pixar film “Luca” — show Disney has an anti-Bruno agenda, the filmmakers insist it isn't so.
According to one article (via Inside the Magic) however, the name's use in both films was purely coincidental. While the creators of Encanto chose the name Bruno for stylistic purposes, Luca's writers picked the name at random.
100% Coco (2017) - Valentijn Avé as Bruno - IMDb.
What traumatic event occurred in Encanto? An army attacked Abuela Alma and her husband Pedro's home village which forced the couple to flee with their young triplets. The armed soldiers chased both Alma and Pedro. Pedro tried to hold them off and ended up getting killed right in front of his wife.
In Encanto, we learn that Abuela endured a massive trauma. Forced to flee from her home with her infant triplets and husband, her husband was murdered trying to protect them as they fled (caveat: The film didn't explicitly show this; it's only implied).
Mirabel is initially portrayed as full of life; she's plucky and cute. But Hiers said that this is depression masquerading itself.
