Maternal diet – certain foods in the mother's diet may cause symptoms of food allergy or intolerance in her breastfed baby. Some studies have found that particular foods eaten by the motherincluding cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, chocolate, onions and cow's milkcan cause an attack of colic in her breastfed infant.
The exact cause of colic is not known. It is possible that some foods may affect breast milk and contribute to intestinal gas or other digestive problems, which may make crying episodes worse. More research is needed to investigate this relationship.
Colic will eventually run its course and most babies grow out of it by six to 12 weeks of age. Some people find eating a healthy diet while breastfeeding is beneficial to managing colic. Colic seems to affect infants between the ages of about three to six weeks, but could last up to at least a year.
The consumption of a protein-rich maternal diet, grapes, lemons and potatoes by breastfeeding mothers may protect infants from colic.
Breed Some studies identified Standardbreds, Thoroughbreds, Arabs, and warmbloods as having more frequent colics than other breeds, while other studies found the opposite was true. There are no proven trends. Age There is some evidence that more colics occur in horses between the ages of two and ten.
Colic may also be caused by an overabundance of breastmilk. Your baby could be consuming too much foremilk if you have an abundance of milk. The thinner milk that flows from the breast at the start of a feeding is known as foremilk. It has a higher lactose, or milk sugar, content.
What causes colic? There are no known reasons why some babies get colic &ndash some doctors think it's a type of stomach cramp. But it may happen because babies find it harder to digest food when they are really young. Constant crying could also be due to food allergies, such as cow's milk allergy.
Colic usually starts when babies are about 3 weeks old. It gets worse when they are between 4 and 6 weeks old. Most of the time, colicky babies get better after they are 6 weeks old, and are completely fine by the time they are 12 weeks old.
Colic typically begins at two weeks of age and usually resolves by four months of age.
Usually, cuddling or trying to soothe the baby's cries does not work. The cause is unknown but colic generally stops, without treatment, after a few weeks.
One reason colicky babies can fuss more at night, he explains, is that serotonin levels peak in the evening. This imbalance, the theory goes, naturally resolves when babies start making melatonin, which relaxes intestinal muscles.
Colic is when a healthy baby cries for a very long time, for no obvious reason. It is most common during the first 6 weeks of life. It usually goes away on its own by age 3 to 4 months.
You do not need to stop nursing. 1 Breastfeeding is not a cause of colic, and babies who take infant formula get colic, too. Switching to formula may not help and may even make the situation worse.
Colic may be related to a baby's temperament and personality, and those traits are known to be inherited. However, colic does not seem to run in families. Up to 30 percent of normal, healthy babies have colic, and boys and girls are equally affected.
Horses evolved as hindgut fermenters, grazing for most of the day while constantly moving. However, modern management practices are not always aligned with the natural lifestyle of horses. Typical practices such as stall confinement and low forage intake have become key contributors to increased risk of colic.

Additionally, the food choices women make during pregnancy are likely to be similar to food choices they offer their children.
During pregnancy, poor diets lacking in key nutrients – like iodine, iron, folate, calcium and zinc – can cause anaemia, pre-eclampsia, haemorrhage and death in mothers. They can also lead to stillbirth, low birthweight, wasting and developmental delays for children.
