In feng shui, the headboard is best when securely placed up to a wall. However, it is not desirable to have the three other sides of the bed (left, right, and the foot of the bed) against a wall. For instance, if your bed is set up so that one side is right up against a wall, it makes that side harder to access.
The ideal position of the bed is therefore with the headboard against the wall, not facing the door or window. This is because a negative feeling of lack of privacy and a limited sense of protection and seclusion should not be accentuated.

Typically 24 inches between the bed and the wall on each side allows you enough room to move around the bed comfortably. When choosing which corner to place the bed in, try to leave 36 to 40 inches between the bed and dressers or cabinets. This space allows you easy access to drawers and doors.

In small bedrooms such layout will help making the most of the floor space, save space, make the room more comfortable and free up space for moving around the room. In large bedrooms you can use the bed as an anchor of the design and create a symmetrical or asymmetrical environment.
More than the direction of the bed, it is important to have good sleep hygiene for a good night's sleep. There is no convincing evidence that your bed should face a certain way. However, feng shui recommends that you should point your headboard toward the south.
