Even after washing your hair, oil does have the tendency to stick to your hair. Not washing and wiping your locks well can cause your strands to stain your sheets and clothes. Hence it's important to shampoo, condition, air dry and wipe your strands after washing your oil-drenched hair.
Apply oil before washing your hair:
This is something you might already know. Shampoos can make your hair dry and frizzy. To make sure that your hair gets cleaned but still remains nourished and frizz-free, apply oil every time before you wash your hair.
Always apply oil before washing your hair
“We all know that oil is a great moisturizer and if you want to keep your mane hydrated and frizz-free then you must apply oil before washing your hair,” explains Dr Kapoor. She also adds that hair oil protects the scalp from harsh chemicals.
Massage the scalp with finger tips (don't use nails) for 10 minutes to improve circulation. Leave the oil for at least an hour before washing it off. Leaving the oil overnight is even better.
Water is effective at washing away dirt, dust, and other water-soluble debris from the hair and scalp without stripping the hair of this sebum. However, Mamelak notes that if there are other oils in the hair (from a haircare or styling product, for example), a good portion of these will be left behind as well.
Apply oil to the ends of your hair. Use your fingers to spread the oil evenly from the middle of your hair to the ends. Keep oil in hair as long as desired (20 minutes to an hour) and then wash out.
Normal Hair: If your scalp is neither too oily nor too dry, you can oil your hair twice a week. Oily Hair: Those with oily hair and an oily scalp filled with build-up grease and residue can oil their scalp only once per week. Leave it overnight or for a few hours before washing it off with your shampoo.
In general, it is not recommended to leave oil on for more than 6-8 hours, as that might make things tricky. The oil can attract a lot of dirt, dust, grime and get them to stick to your hair! So, it will take a lot more effort to wash your hair with all this added stuff to wash off.
The moment your hair is left to soak in oil for more than 12 hours, your scalp collects dirt and mixes with your scalp's natural oil. Leaving oil on your hair overnight can make it greasy and sticky, and it will also attract dust from your pillow and bed. As a result, it can lead to hair loss and other hair problems.
Avoid leaving oil in overnight
The longer, the better — that may be true for some hair treatments but not for hair oiling as the oil can block your hair follicles. Unless an ayurvedic doctor or expert has asked you to leave a medicated oil overnight, wash out the oil within 3-4 hours.
As a regular practice, it is natural to reach out for your comb right after oiling your hair to remove tangles. But this is a common mistake and you should avoid it. After a good oil massage, you scalp becomes relaxed and fragile, combing your hair immediately after can cause hair breakage and hair loss.
It is best to apply your hot oil treatment after you have washed your hair. You don't want to apply it to dirty hair because your hair will not benefit as much. You want the oil to fully penetrate your scalp and clean hair, and if your hair is dirty, the scalp oil will just sit on top of your hair.
More oil means using more shampoo, and this in turn can strip your hair of its natural oils and moisture, leaving you with dull, damaged and dry locks. Tight hairstyles are a strict no-no especially after you've oiled your hair. When your hair is oiled, it is in a vulnerable state.

Oil your hair no more than 1 to 2 times a week. Leave it on for approximately an hour or two but you don't need to leave it on longer than that. When you leave oil on too long you run the risk of zits because oil will run down onto your skin and you also don't add any real benefit by leaving it on longer..
