The most important anointing in the Bible doesn't involve oil, however. When Jesus returned to his hometown synagogue, he opened God's Word and declared that he had been anointed with the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God himself anointed Jesus to proclaim the good news of salvation.
Matthew and Mark are very similar: Matthew 26:6–13. While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.
Moses anointed Aaron and his sons to serve in the sacred priesthood (Exodus 40:12–15; Leviticus 8:30). Samuel the prophet poured oil on the head of Saul, Israel's first king, and David, Israel's second king (1 Samuel 10:1; 16:12–13). Zadok the priest anointed King Solomon (1 Kings 1:39; 1 Chronicles 29:22).
Prophets anointed priests and kings, and the sick were anointed with oil as part of the procedure of healing by faith and by the laying on of hands.
Jesus encourages his followers to anoint themselves with oil whenever they take up the practice of fasting (Matthew 6:17). And to pour oil on the sick as part of the healing process (Mark 6:13).
Anointing, also called Unction, is the pouring of oil on an item or body part, often the head. Sometimes animal fat or melted butter is used.
The Roman Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran Churches bless three types of holy oils for anointing: "Oil of the Catechumens" (abbreviated OS, from the Latin oleum sanctum, meaning holy oil), "Oil of the Infirm" (OI), and "Sacred Chrism" (SC).
There is something unique about the anointing oil. It is recorded in the Bible that when the anointing oil was poured over individuals, their lives were changed and they began to embark upon extraordinary exploits. The oil released the power and presence of the Holy Spirit into their lives.
The term anointed appears many times in the bible. For example: Samuel 16:3: "Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you." Psalm 20:6: "Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed."

He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; he is the one." So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power. Samuel then went to Ramah.
The anointing empowers you to press on. When everyone tells you to stop, when everything is hindering you from moving forward, the anointing will empower you to move. When men and women have become weary, you will be enabled to move on once you have tapped into the anointing of God.
The Stone of Unction, also known as the Stone of Anointing, is the place where Christ' body was laid down after being removed from the crucifix and prepared for burial. He was anointed and wrapped in shrouds as the Jews customarily prepared their dead for burial at the time.
In John's story, which takes place in Bethany, Mary is identified as a beloved friend of Jesus (11:5) who anoints Jesus in her brother's home (12:1) in gratitude for the raising of Lazarus, and Jesus connects her act of devotion with his own burial (12:7).
Oil was also used for anointing because it was a symbol of divine blessing, which God would deny to all who were unfaithful (as described in the books of Micah and Joel). Perhaps most important for the process of anointing, olive oil was also symbolically linked to the coming of the Spirit of God.
Anointing Oil Ingredients. The Lord God gave Moses instructions on the ingredients to use when making the holy anointing oil in Exodus 30:22–25. They included: the most delicate spices, measured in shekels; 500 liquid myrrh, 250 sweet-smelling cinnamon, 500 cassia, 250 aromatic cane, and a hint of olive oil.
In Exodus 30, the composition of anointing oil was given based on five specific ingredients –myrrh, cinnamon, calamus, cassia, and olive oil. There are many anointing oils sold today which may not adhere strictly to the original recipe.
