Kai performed an original song for Amelia (Caterina Scorsone), and it turns out, their song is actually an original by E.R. Fightmaster, the actor who plays Kai. In addition to working as an actor, Fightmaster also leads a band called Twin and according to Fightmaster, the Grey's Anatomy writers are fans.
Non-binary people are usually not intersex: they're usually born with bodies that may fit typical definitions of male and female, but their innate gender identity is something other than male or female.
On Wednesday, Oct. 27, Variety reported that the actor, who uses they/them pronouns, will stay on Grey's Anatomy in the role of Dr. Kai Bartley for more of season 18. Fightmaster plays the first non-binary doctor for the medical drama and has already appeared in two episodes of the new season.
But with all of these new dynamics, Grey's also managed to call back to one of our fan favorites in a surprising way. That's right: One of the new interns, Lucas Adams (Niko Terho) is Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey)'s nephew.

“I don't want kids, though. I have things I want to do with my life, professionally and personally,” Kai admitted. Kai went on to explain that they had no intentions of changing their mind, and ultimately ended the romance with Amelia.
Fans first met Kai on season 18 of the doctor series in 2021. At that time, Kai struck up a romance with Amelia and the duo were dubbed “Kaimelia” by supporters. At the end of the season, Kai relocated to Minnesota, which resulted in the pair trying to do long distance.
Fightmaster is making history on "Grey's Anatomy" as Dr. Kai Bartley. The actor, who is nonbinary and plays the show's first nonbinary doctor, has been upped to a recurring character for the series' 18th season. Fightmaster was first introduced as Kai in the Oct.
The surprising breakup with Kai only worsened things for Amelia, adding to her fears of abandonment, which impacted all of Amelia's interactions in Grey's Anatomy season 19, episode 16.
