Played by Kevin Costner, John Dutton III is the head of the family all throughout
Kayce (Luke Grimes) is the third son of John III and Evelyn. His character always seems to be surrounded by conflict, heartbreak, and death. He is not the closest with his father, but their relationship isn't necessarily bad, either. He is the husband to Monica Dutton; together, they share a son named Tate.
Kayce John Dutton is a main character on Yellowstone. He is John and Evelyn Dutton's son.
John Dutton, the family patriarch, has one remaining biological son, the fearless but naive Kayce Dutton. He also has an adopted son, Jamie Dutton, that he considers more of a rival than a son. In the Reddit post, “Yellowstone” fans discuss why John Dutton favors Kayce over Jamie.
John's biological children include Lee Dutton (Dave Annable), Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), and Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes). Lee passed away at the beginning of the series, while Beth, another fierce and devoted Dutton woman, is now married to Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), who has assumed the role of dedicated Yellowstone ...
Beth finally learns another deep family secret: John Dutton has been chucking corpses on the Montana border for years; in fact, the episode began with a young Rip (Kyle Red Silverstein), who at the urging of a young John Dutton (Josh Lucas), discards the body of a cowboy who got a little too lippy about his beloved ...
Kevin Costner is yet to publicly reveal the reasons why he has walked away from his role as John Dutton, but when the news was confirmed, the official line of reasoning from bosses on Yellowstone was that Kevin is choosing to focus on his upcoming movie project, Horizon.
Cole Hauser plays Rip Wheeler in Yellowstone. Rip is the unofficially adopted son of John Dutton.
Though they play on-screen father and daughter, they are not related to each other in any way. Costner is the father of seven children: Annie, Lily, Joe, Liam, Cayden, Hayes, and Grace. While Annie, Lily, and Joe have all acted before, none of them appeared in Yellowstone alongside their father.
Spencer Dutton is the younger son of James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) from the 1883 series. He is also the younger brother of John Dutton Sr (James Badge Dale). As James Dutton from 1883 was John Dutton's great-grandfather, this makes Spencer one of John's grandfathers.
She knows Kayce killed her brother. When Kayce protests that he had no choice, Monica points out he never had to be there in the first place. Monica wants to protect Tate by keeping him away from Kayce and John and will take him away from Kayce to do so.
James's wife Margaret is portrayed by his real-live love, Faith Hill. She's a strong woman and mother of three (Elsa, Spencer, and John) who joins James in their perilous journey west, eventually settling in Montana.
When Kayce and Jamie decided they would always be brothers. In season 3, we found out (and so did Jamie), that he was adopted. But in season 4, Jamie (Wes Bentley) gets even further removed from the Dutton family.
Family & marriage
John and Evelyn Dutton were blessed with three more children: Kayce has two brothers (Lee and Jamie) and a sister (Beth).
Jacob took over the Yellowstone Dutton ranch after James and his wife, Margaret died, taking in the couple's two surviving children as well. While he and his wife Cara have no children of their own, his relation to James makes him either the great-granduncle or great-great-granduncle of Yellowstone's John Dutton.
With Beth being unable to have children and Carter and recently orphaned, Yellowstone seemed to suggest that the young man was a surrogate son for the show's main couple. Beth even told Rip, "I think he's our kid," when she first brought Carter back to the ranch.
The underlying reason for John Dutton's dislike of Jamie is their differing personality and views on life. It is why they often fight, argue, and even work against each other in various stages of their life. Of course, it's also possible that John dislikes Jamie because he's adopted and not a true-blooded Dutton.
In the finale of season two, John gives Beth a letter that says he accepts Rip as a son and that he's also gifting Rip a house on the ranch.
"The Dutton story continues, picking up where Yellowstone leaves off in another epic tale."
Thanks to a deal made before “Yellowstone” turned out to be an enormous hit, and before Paramount Plus was up and running, “Yellowstone” instead calls Peacock its exclusive streaming home. Peacock is the NBCUniversal streaming service.
In May 2023, Paramount announced that season 5 will be Yellowstone's final season. However, a sequel series is slated to air in December 2023.
After Jamie learned about his adoption, he asked Kayce for a favor, saying, “I need some advice, brother… If I can still call you that.” Kayce replies to him, “Until the day you die, you better never call me anything else.” This implies that Kayce had an inkling about the adoption.
