Some powdered formulations of Metamucil contain sugar. Patients on a calorie-restricted diet should read the label to account for the calories per serving in Metamucil Powders (caloric content varies by specific product). There are, however, sugar free Metamucil Powders and Capsules that have fewer calories.

The Orange Smooth Powder with Real Sugar variety of Metamucil has 90 calories and 23 grams of carbs per serving, of which 16 grams are from sugar and the rest are from dietary fiber.
A serving of Metamucil contains 6g of carbohydrates. This amount of carbohydrates is equivalent to two teaspoons of Metamucil powder or one sachet of Metamucil fiber capsules. It is important to note that Metamucil is sugar-free and 100% soluble fiber.
Downsides
Common side effects include abdominal cramps, bloating, and changes in stool consistency. May aggravate hemorrhoids or anal fissures. If the daily recommended amount of fluid is not drunk, then Metamucil could cause severe constipation, especially in people who are already dehydrated.
