Gardenias are heavy feeders and like lots of iron and magnesium. Every 2-3 months from spring to autumn feed with a dose of cow manure and a bit of Certified Organic fertiliser if your soil is particularly poor.

The problem with using too much osmocote is that ammonia might leach into the water column and affect fauna, especially if you disturb the substrate with planting/rearranging and so forth.

Osmocote contains a balance of nitrate and ammoniacal nitrogen which will have a slight acidifying effect to the soil. Here are a couple hints to keep your hydrangeas blue. It is actually the availability of aluminum to the plant that makes hydrangea flowers blue.
Fertilizing Gardenias in Pots
Choose a fertilizer that is designed for acid loving plants. Organic gardeners could use blood meal, fish emulsion and bone meal. Also a yearly addition of compost should keep your soil rich and full of nutrients.
Simply dig you hole, add the recommended amount of Osmocote into the hole, then plant your flower or bulb on top of it. The smart-release product will continue to feed your plants for 4 months. Osmocote is guaranteed not to burn!
Osmocote is not a slow or timed release fertilizer, it is a controlled release fertilizer. The release rate is controlled by soil temperature. Putting it on top of the soil would be inefficient as water is required to wash the evacuating salts that coat the prill into the soil.
Fannin Tree Farm highly recommends using Osmocote Flower and Vegetable on all your trees twice a year in April and August. It is a pelletized slow-release fertilizer that releases its nutrients over several months. It will not burn plants or trees and only requires two fertilizations per year.
When the soil temperature (for Osmocote, anyway) is above that point, the release is faster and the product will not feed for as many months as the package says. For example, an 80 degree soil temperature will shorten Osmocote Outdoor & Indoor from 4 months (at 70 degrees) to 3 months.
Question: To go completely organic with my plants, what do I use in place of Osmocote? Answer: We have many options in the organic tool box. I have used dry and liquid molasses with great success. Other good organic fertilizers include Garrett Juice Plus and fish meal, plus products from Ladybug and Nature's Guide.
