This is a question that is often asked. And to those residents in rural areas across Australia, who are unfortunately not privileged with strong or fast internet, our answer is YES.
Starlink is currently a premium-priced product so the general consensus is that Starlink may be a better option depending on the type of NBN technology you have available. If you have NBN Satellite or NBN fixed wireless you will most likely have increased performance through upgrading to Starlink.
If you're still unsure you'll be able to confirm that coverage is available when you enter your address on the Starlink website. To support the Starlink satellites in orbit there are 20 Starlink ground stations in Australia spread between New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia.
The primary disadvantage of Starlink is its high latency. This means that data takes longer to travel from the user to the satellite and back, resulting in slower connection speeds.
Such low latency would put Starlink on par with many terrestrial broadband services, making it a viable option for online gaming. Another issue faced by Australian gamers is the lack of high-speed internet access in rural and remote areas.
SpaceX's Starlink internet is a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet provider from the mind of Elon Musk. Starlink internet offers unlimited data, above broadband speeds for most of its plans, and less latency than most satellite internet providers.
Another option is the NBN's Sky Muster satellite service. "It tends to be a … primary option for people who have limited choice," Mr Geddes says. Critics complain Sky Muster products have data caps, meaning users can't access unlimited video streaming and the download speeds are nowhere near as fast as Starlink's.
This is caused by too many Starlink customers in your area trying to connect at the same time. Since there is limited bandwidth through the satellites, you are competing with other Starlink users for speed. You can test to see if your issue is network congestion by performing a speed test outside of peak hours.
For millions of Americans, that's a life-changing opportunity, enough that the service has already garnered a PCMag Readers' Choice award. After months of use and weeks of testing, we can confirm that it lives up to the hype. Editor's Note 5/17/23: This review was first published in September 2022.
The newly launched Starlink V2 Mini satellites appear to be in trouble, Elon Musk confirmed yesterday. The SpaceX CEO said some units will likely have to be deorbited and destroyed in the Earth's atmosphere, while the remaining units stay in space for further testing.
Starlink's download speed in Australia was 24 per cent slower during the final quarter of 2022 then it was the prior year – but it's still outpacing its fixed broadband competitors. This is according to Ookla's latest speedtests for SpaceX's Starlink and Sky Logic services.
In August 2022 SpaceX lowered monthly service costs for users in select countries. For example, users in Brazil and Chile saw monthly fee decreases of about 50%. In February 2023 it was reported that Starlink had 95,000 subscribers in Australia. As of May 2023, Starlink reported over 1.5 million active subscribers.
On Wednesday Optus announced that it would be partnering with SpaceX's Starlink satellite system to “cover 100% of Australia” with mobile connectivity.
You'll be paying for: Plan fees: $139 per month for unlimited data. Hardware fees: $924 (includes Starlink dish, router, power supply, cables and mounting tripod)

New data shows Starlink users are happy with their service
Starlink's net promoter score (NPS), which measures customers' loyalty to a brand by asking how likely they are to recommend the service, beat out fixed broadband providers for both metro and nonmetro areas, despite slower median download speeds.
While Starlink's downloads can be fast, its upload speeds are much slower than LCWA, usually well less than 10Mbps. That can affect Zoom video sessions where you are streaming the video up to others. Or if you upload big work files it will feel very slow.
Starlink isn't as fast as fiber, but it still reaches broadband speeds according to the FCC. Fiber can be 4-5x faster vs Starlink, with a lower monthly cost, and better reliability. Latency is also lower. The downside of fiber is that it isn't available in many places in the US, especially in rural areas.
At a three percent failure rate — assuming it stays consistent — that amounts to 1,260 immobilized satellites waiting to smash into other stuff in space. "I would say their failure rate is not egregious," McDowell told Business Insider. "It's not worse than anybody else's failure rates.
With download speeds up to 100 Mbps, and upload speeds of up to 10 Mbps, Starlink is fast enough for the vast majority of users in 2023. With these speeds, you'll be able to stream shows and movies, download large files, and game online without issues.
Does the Starlink kit come with a Wifi router? The Standard kit includes a Wifi router.
If Taiwan were given access to Starlink, it would make a Chinese invasion that much more difficult. But China's concerns go beyond that. It fears that America, through Starlink, is gobbling up territory in low-Earth orbit. China, too, wants to be a power in this domain.
Depending on which plan you choose, Viasat can offer faster speeds than Starlink. For example, the higher-end Viasat plans offer 300–500GB of high-speed data (with unlimited connectivity beyond that point), which is competitive with Starlink, and 100 Mbps, which is faster than the typical Starlink experience.
Starlink was initially only able to deliver internet to "low and remote density areas", but can now also sell plans to people living in cities. You could, theoretically, order a Starlink plan in inner-city Sydney. Musk has however previously said that Starlink will work best in low-population-density situations.
