LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — If you thought that chicken sandwich you ordered at Subway did not fully taste like fowl, you may have been right. According to a Canadian report, a DNA test shows only half of Subway's oven-roasted chicken patty is made with real chicken.
The meat from every chain but Subway was found to contain between 84 and 90 percent chicken meat. Those looking to "eat fresh" at Subway, however, are only consuming 53.6 percent chicken meat, the analysis found.

In the tests, most of the meat from Subway's competitors was shown to contain 85 to 90 percent chicken DNA, but Subway's oven roasted chicken registered at just 53.6 percent.
There are some sugary and calorie-packed sauces and dressings to avoid at Subway too. Skip the ranch, mayo and sweet onion sauce (it packs in a surprising 7 grams of sugar per serving).
Although it has been confirmed as of July 2020 that the Subway store in Roxburgh Park VIC uses Steggles to supply their chicken and the following two items are Halal certified. Keep in mind, all Subway locations across Australia offer a range of Pork items on their menu and cross-contamination serves a big risk.

In general, Subway's meals are low in sugar and a decent source of fiber and protein, however, many are also loaded with fat and sodium. Part of Subway's appeal is that you can customize your meal. Take advantage of this option by choosing healthy toppings and nixing the cheese and full-fat condiments.

Subway markets its whole menu as healthy and more specifically a “healthy” alternative fast food. However, while it might be better than most fast food, nutritionally it can vary a lot depending on your choice of bread, fillings, toppings and sauces.
