The Dalbo dog (Dalbohund) or Dalsland
The Molossian Hound was an ancient Greek dog and "pawhaps" the most famous extinct breed in history. Bred in ancient Epirus by the Molossian tribe, this gigantic guard dog is the ancestor of the Mastiff and the stuff of literary legend. A Molossian features in the Satyricon, a 2nd-century work of Latin fiction.
While many of our modern dog breeds may resemble the English Water Spaniel, the last of the true breed members became extinct in the early 20th century. The English Water Spaniel is thought to be one of the oldest of the Spaniels, originating in the 16th century.
The Thylacine (Thylacinus cynocephalus: dog-headed pouched-dog) is a large carnivorous marsupial now believed to be extinct. It was the only member of the family Thylacinidae to survive into modern times. It is also known as the Tasmanian Tiger or Tasmanian Wolf.
The first extinct dog breed we will meet is the white English terrier! The white English terrier was originally bred from the white fox-working terrier. These dogs have been prevalent in England since the 1700s. Breeding the white English terrier was an attempt at creating a winning show dog.
In fact, Bobi (b. 11 May 1992) is not just the oldest dog living; he's the oldest dog ever. Bobi is 30 years 266 days old as of 1 February 2023. He has lived his entire life with the Costa family in the rural village of Conqueiros, in Leiria, Portugal.
The most widely accepted earliest dog remains are those of the Bonn-Oberkassel dog which date to 15,000 YBP. Earlier remains dating back to 30,000 YBP have been described as Paleolithic dogs but their status as dogs or wolves remains debated.
On 7 September 1936 only two months after the species was granted protected status, the last known thylacine died from exposure at Beaumaris Zoo in Hobart. It is estimated there were around 5,000 thylacines in Tasmania at the time of European settlement.
4. Tibetan Mastiff – $10,000. This massive doggo made its way to American from Tibet where it protected sheep from predators like wolves, leopards, and bears.

The consumer goods division says there are 471 million pet dogs worldwide. Wikipedia says there are 900 million dogs, and rising.
There are between 700 million and 1 billion dogs in the world. The number includes the total world dog population — both dogs living in households and strays.
Norwegian Lundehund
Dating back to the Ice Age, the Norwegian Lundehund is recognised as one of the rarest dog breeds on the planet due to its unique characteristics, which aren't shared by any other breed.
As previously stated, extinct dogs are often a result of human disinterest. Perhaps the breed went out of fashion, so it was no longer profitable to breed. Or, more commonly, you'll soon see these extinct dogs were bred for a niche purpose that gradually wasn't needed.
Born on May 11, 1992, Bobi takes the Guinness Book of World Records title from Bluey, whom Les Hall of Rochester, Victoria, inherited as a puppy from his father in 1910. Bluey worked among cattle and sheep for nearly 20 years and was euthanised on November 14, 1939, aged 29 years and five months.
Dingo. The dingo is probably the most well-known dog breeds in Australia. It's over 4000 years old and, although we love to say it's an Aussie dog breed, it might actually have come from Asia! Dingoes cope well in Australia's climate, but aren't really suitable as pets.
There is also a very rare color called “cifra” (blue-merle), which is a dark or light gray marbled color.
1. Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican Hairless Dog) A dog breed that has been on this planet for over 3000 years, the Aztec dog of the gods, Xoloitzcuintli was almost extinct back in the 1950s but due to efforts by breeders, it has survived.
"In shape, the Paleolithic dogs most resemble the Siberian husky, but in size, however, they were somewhat larger, probably comparable to large shepherd dogs," added Germonpré, a paleontologist at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences.
