Toothless and Hiccup, the two main characters within the film trilogy, also sustain disabilities. In the first film, How to Train Your Dragon (2010), Hiccup shoots Toothless down with a net, leading to him losing a tail fin and rendering him unable to fly.
But what makes the series especially fascinating, even quietly revolutionary, is its approach to depicting disability. Both the series' main protagonists – Hiccup the Viking and Toothless the Night Fury – are amputees.

Toothless, who is unable to fly without Hiccup controlling his prostetic tail, is unable to follow. The “First Date” clips seems to lead to “Automatic Tail,” during which Hiccup builds an automatic tail, allowing Toothless to independently fly — and get to know the Light Fury.
