Even dry pumps (when you pump but nothing comes out) sends a signal to your body that more milk is needed on tap, so it's getting the work done even if there's no output to show for it right away. Stick with it and you'll see the results after a few days.
If I was still producing milk at the 20-minute mark, or if a letdown didn't start until minute 8 of a 10-minute pumping session, I would keep pumping until the letdown was finished, regardless of the time. However, if you are following the schedule and no milk is coming, keep going.
1. You feel engorged, but little or no milk comes out when you pump. When you can feel the milk in your breasts but can't get it to come out, the issue is often getting a letdown. Milk stays in your breasts except when you're nursing or pumping (aside from the occasional leak).
With both methods, keep pumping even if there is no milk coming out. This continued stimulation of the breast will signal to your body that more milk is needed.
And make sure that your baby is able to put his or her mouth around your nipple to nurse (latch on) and can transfer milk from your breast. Too much pumping can cause problems for nursing moms. Supply is a function of demand – the more milk that you remove, the more milk you may make. Therefore, a lot of extra pumping in addition to nursing could lead a nursing mom to have an oversupply.

Pumping more often can help stimulate breasts to produce more milk. Moms can try pumping both breasts for 15 minutes every two hours for 48-72 hours. Then moms can return to their normal pumping routine. Pumping for longer than 30 minutes may not be beneficial.

Express or pump just enough to relieve discomfort. Pumping too much may encourage your body to make more milk instead of drying it up.
When a pump runs dry, it runs without any liquid going through it. This is always a bad idea, as it puts an inordinate amount of strain on the pump's moving parts. Instead of circulating fluid, a dry running pump pushes nothing but air around, leading to friction, heat, and destruction of delicate internals.
Dry Running is an undesirable condition which affects most pump designs and is characterised when a pump operates without an adequate amount of fluid. In most pump technologies, this leads to cavitation and critical damage to the internal pumping elements such as impellers, lobes, gears, casings, seals & bearings.
If you're dehydrated, you may be unable to produce enough breast milk. Breast milk is made of around 80% water. If you don't drink enough fluids or lose them too quickly, dehydration can set in. That means your body may not have enough water to create breast milk for your baby.
According to the Journal of Gynecology and Neonatal Nursing, women produce about 440 to 1220 milliliters (15 to 41 ounces) of breast milk per day once lactation is established. This is just 0.5 to 1.7 ounces per hour. Pumping just 1 or 2 oz of breast milk in a few hours is normal. This includes pumping both breasts.
Ultimately, if your baby has reached its birth weight and you're pumping enough milk during the day, it's okay to sleep eight hours without pumping at night. Keep in mind there is an adjustment period for your body as it begins to acclimate to the decrease in overnight milk removal.
