It's important to take care of your own health and becoming a carer can be a very stressful situation so if your GP understands, they will be better placed to help and support you with your own health issues.
All GP practices have a carers' register – a list of patients who are providing unpaid care to someone with a long-term health condition. You can speak to the receptionist or practice manager to request a registration form.
Am I a carer? You're probably a carer if all of the following apply: you do things like helping someone to wash, dress and eat; taking them to regular appointments, doing their shopping or keeping them company. you aren't paid to look after the person you're caring for.

Carer Payment (CP) is made to someone providing constant care at under award wages to a person with a sufficiently severe disability in their home. The carer could be a family member or a friend, and they may or may not normally be resident in the home of the person with disability.
Carers Payment
The current maximum rate for a single person is $967.50 per fortnight, or $729.30 for a member of a couple. Constant care is defined as daily care which is the equivalent of a normal working day. The Treating Health Professional and carer are generally required to state this in the application.
Income test for carers
Income includes money from working and financial assets such as superannuation or dividends from shares. If you're single and your income is more than $2,318.00 per fortnight before tax, you're not eligible for Carer Payment.
If you are in receipt of an eligible payment on 1 July, a $600 Carer Supplement is automatically payable in July each year. You can receive the Carer Supplement for each eligible payment so you may receive more than one supplement amount.
To get this payment, both you and the person you care for need to meet some rules. Carer Allowance is $144.80 each fortnight. Complete the following steps to claim Carer Allowance. Before you start, check if you can get it.
Carer Allowance is a supplementary payment if you care for someone who needs daily support. If the person you care for has a terminal medical condition, or needs ongoing daily assistance for at least 12 months, this payment could be for you. You do not have to be related to, or live with, the person you care for. You do not get paid extra if you care for more than one person. If someone else also cares for the same person as you, only one of you can claim Carer's Allowance.
This payment is for those who, due to their caring responsibilities, are unable to support themselves through substantial paid employment. Carer Payment recipients can engage in employment or study for up to 25 hours per week (including travel time) and remain eligible for payment.
A Care Plan is a written plan of management developed by your GP and practice nurse consultation with you. It is a written set of information about what you need in managing your medical condition. All Care Plans are bulk billed by your GP. There will be no charge for these services.

Payment Rates
Carer Allowance is $144.80 each fortnight. There is no Health Care Card for the person you provide care for.
The Carer Allowance is a fortnightly payment to carers of someone with a severe disability or illness or who is frail aged to assist with the additional costs of caring on top of their usual costs of daily living. Everyone on the Carer Payment will automatically receive the Carer Allowance.
If you're getting an eligible payment you'll get Carer Supplement between 5 July and 1 August 2023. To get Carer Supplement, you need to get an eligible payment for a period that includes 1 July. We'll pay you Carer Supplement for each eligible person you care for. You don't need to do anything to get this payment.
About 53,000 care workers will receive a £1,000 bonus from April, the Welsh government has announced. The payment will be made to registered care home and home care workers alongside the introduction of the real living wage. One care home manager said it was not enough to cope with rises in the cost of living.
The bonus will be paid to workers providing care and support in Government subsidised home care and to residential aged care workers. The payments will be for clinical care workers and expanded to all those providing direct care, food or cleaning services in Government subsidised residential care.
The Government has provided two separate $750 payments to social security, veteran and other income support recipients and eligible concession card holders. Around half of those that benefit are pensioners. These payments will support households to manage the economic impact of the Coronavirus.
Does Centrelink back pay the carer payment? Carer Allowance claimants will no longer be able to have their payment backdated up to 12 weeks prior to contacting Centrelink about the payment.
How long will my claim take to process? If you provide all the necessary information when you lodge the claim, you should receive a response from Centrelink within 12 weeks of lodging.
