A bed is typically placed along the center of a bedroom's longest wall because this is the ideal location to make it a focal point of the space, but it's not your only option. If you have a large bedroom, placing a bed in the corner can make a bold statement.
Where should I put my bed in a small bedroom? Start by putting your bed frame in the center of the most visible wall. (It's usually the wall facing the doorway.) Putting your bed frame in the center will give your small bedroom layout symmetry so you can make the most of your space.
A corner bed can become quite handy when you want to maximize functionality in a room. Here, a corner bed allows the other half of the room to be used as an office. Studio apartments also benefit from this floor plan.
And since your bed is the room's focal point, it makes sense to place it in the center. Depending on the placement of the door in your bedroom, this might leave your feet directly facing the door. But a centered position will usually place the bed off to one side for a less direct line of sight.
In addition to a greater number of doors and windows, there are also niches, recesses and fireplaces. Thus, placing the bed in the centre of the room by studying the best positioning of the bed in relation to the other furnishings is an intelligent solution to exploit the room in its entirety.
Positioning your bed in line with the door is the worst possible position, according to the principles of Feng shui. People who practice Feng shui call it the 'dead man's position' or the 'coffin position' because the feet or head face the door and resemble how we carry the dead through open doors from the house.
To achieve balance, your head should point southward while you sleep, in line with the Earth's electromagnetic pull. Ideally, your entire bedroom would be oriented south as well. Some research has shown that those who sleep in the north-south position also take longer.
It can make you feel more vulnerable as glass is not as solid as a wall. The sunlight can intrude on restful sleep as it is brighter near the window. The temperature is more varied next to the window. Feng shui bed placement principals warn against it because it leads to a loss of positive energy.
In feng shui, we place the bed using the principle of the commanding position. You want your bed located so that when you're lying in bed, you can see the door to the bedroom. However, you don't want to be directly in line with the door either.
3 – The Bed Should Be Aligned With the Middle of the Wall
Feng Shui guides would tell you that having your bed in the corner or not equidistantly in the middle of the wall can create unbalance and from a rational perspective I can certainly see how, particularly if the bed is shared by two people.
The best sleeping position for couples as per Vastu is to keep the head towards the south, southeast, or southwest. It is strongly advised not to keep the head towards the north while sleeping. It can make you stressed and exhausted.
Strategically Place the Bed
She recommends placing the bed against a solid wall as opposed to beneath a window. Additionally, you should have a full view of the door from your bed (just be sure not to put the bed directly in the door's path). If possible, leave plenty of space in front of the bed.
Low beds are ideal for smaller bedrooms because they take up less vertical space and lift the eye line, making the room feel bigger than it is.
Bright light colours will help to radiate your small space and make the room appear bigger. Tidy any clutter away and when choosing furniture ensure you opt for light hues such as oak wood or white gloss. Elsewhere, clear floors and cupboard surfaces will help to create the illusion of a larger room.
More than the direction of the bed, it is important to have good sleep hygiene for a good night's sleep. There is no convincing evidence that your bed should face a certain way. However, feng shui recommends that you should point your headboard toward the south.
Your bed should be placed in the "command" position or far away from and unaligned with the door. The door should be visible from the bed. This placement encourages the natural flow of chi, which in turn promotes restfulness, sleep and motivation; all of which are conducive to a successful professional life.
Feng Shui rules warn against placing your bed under a window as it is believed that energy flows out of the room through these openings. Leaving a bed in the flow of these energies could result in a restless sleep and prevent you from having a Feng Shui bedroom that increases luck.
(Yes, it is as hard concept as it sounds). So, according to Feng Shui, you must not place your bed next to a window. Because all the energies going in and out the window may hinder your restful sleep.
What is the best position? The best solution is to position the bed facing the door leaving the window to the side, this solution offers many benefits, firstly it improves air circulation and secondly it makes us feel more protected during the night.
The practice of Feng Shui is based on the idea that energy flows through the doors and windows of a room; therefore, it is important that your bed sits off this path. This will promote a feeling of safety and security and promote a good night's sleep.
To bring harmony to a bedroom the female should always sleep on the left hand side of the bed and the man on the right (if you are standing at the end of the bed looking at the bedhead). If you'd like to learn how Feng Shui can improve your relationships, come along to one of my upcoming workshops.
The ideal position of the bed is therefore with the headboard against the wall, not facing the door or window. This is because a negative feeling of lack of privacy and a limited sense of protection and seclusion should not be accentuated.
