It is recommended that your Quilt / Doona and Quilt Cover / Doona Cover are both a size larger than your bed sizes. You can use King quilt covers for your queen bed. This allows for a nice overhang at the end and on the sides of the bed, and therefore ensures that you do not see the mattress.
An easy rule of thumb is to buy a quilt and quilt cover at least one size bigger than your bed. So, if you're snoozing on a single, use a double quilt, and if you've doubled down on bed size, cover it with a queen.
Now that you know the size of the mattress and how much drop you need, you're ready to compute the width of your quilt. Add your drop twice to the width of the mattress. (You're adding the drop twice because the quilt needs to hang down both sides of the mattress.)
When it comes to duvets it is a great idea to buy the next size up from your bed size. It is the width that changes for each size and if you choose a duvet the same size as your bed, it will only come to the middle or end of the mattress. This is especially true for beds with deeper mattresses.
Typically quilts terminate at the head end of the bed; however, you may want to add 24 to 40 inches to the desired length only, creating a tuck for pillows. For example, a double bed -- 54 by 75 inches -- with a 16-inch mattress needs a coverlet-sized quilt 88 inches wide and either 91 or 116 to132 inches long.
Measure the mattress width and add twice the drop length. For a comforter-size finished project, measure from the top of the mattress to slightly past its lower edge to figure the drop length. For a coverlet, measure from the top of the mattress to slightly past the bottom of the bed rail.
Typically, your duvet cover should be filled with a comforter that allows plus or minus two inches in dimension. If you want a snugger fit, then you should purchase a comforter that is bigger than your duvet cover by two inches in both dimensions.
How wide should my duvet be? A single duvet must be at least 30 cm wider than your chest size to cover you. A double duvet must be as wide as the mattress that you and your partner sleep on.
While the designs tend to be plainer rather than floral or patterned, there is a range to choose from. Super king bedspreads are typically 315cm wide x 270 cm long. These bedding items will only fit a super king size bed, and are not designed for use on a standard king size bed.
A king comforter on a queen bed will fall close to the floor on the sides, but only a little below the mattress at the foot of the bed. A king comforter on a queen bed will fall close to the floor on the sides, but only a little below the mattress at the foot of the bed.
A queen-size quilt is generally 60 inches by 80 inches. However, there is no standard size for a queen-size quilt; they can vary in size depending on their final application.
Can you use a king size duvet on a double bed? Yes, if you prefer a larger size duvet then you can use a bigger size than your bed.
In practice, if you purchase a queen comforter labeled full/queen for your full-sized bed, the edges may fall closer to the floor than you wish. Similarly, if you have a queen-sized bed and you purchase a comforter labeled full/queen, you may find that it is not quite wide enough to cover your bed adequately.
This shrinkage is strictly due to the quilting and finishing. The quilt will shrink more when it is washed if the materials used were not pre-shrunk. When you plan your next bed quilt, keep in mind that shrinkage is a fact.
Place a King-sized duvet insert (down or down alternative) inside a Queen-sized duvet cover. The look will be fluffier, without the extra heat and weight, because of the larger duvet insert placed inside the cover.
The common rule of thumb is to use a duvet cover that is slightly larger than the comforter. It will be comfortable for both looks and comfort.
For queen beds with a mattress depth of 12" or under, we recommend our standard queen duvet (if your mattress is over 12", see the jumbo queen paragraph below!). A typical queen duvet measures 88" x 90".
Queen-Sized Duvets
Queen-sized beds are the most popular of all standard bed sizes. Whether part of a master bedroom or a guest bedroom, queen-sized duvets have always been a popular bedding item. As we noted in the duvet size chart above, a queen-sized Down duvet will typically measure 90 x 90-inches (229 x 229 cm).
"If it is too large, the duvet can shift around inside the cover." She adds that if the fabric of the duvet is too tight or slippery (this is common if the material is synthetic), then it is also bound to slip. Contract notes that even the act of putting a duvet and its cover together contributes to the problem.
Whether you want your bedspread to touch the floor or not is completely down to personal preference. A bedspread that touches the floor looks luxurious and can also help to hide anything below the bed if you use it for storage.
Size of a Lap Quilt
A “typical” lap quilt is 36 inches by 48 inches. But this can be adjusted to meet your specific needs. Remember, this is just a guide. When you are doing the sewing, you can make it whatever size you want.
A nine-patch quilt block is one of the most recognized patterns in quilting -- and it's also one of the easiest patterns for a new beginning quilter to try. This pattern uses precut strips in a unique way to make the nine-patch block in an easy, "cheater" fashion. This quilt is so simple to make and looks beautiful.
