"If you're a daily washer then there's no need to double cleanse (AKA shampoo twice)," says Anabel. "I only say shampoo twice after using Elasticizer or lots of hair products, and only if you have fine hair or only wash your hair less than every other day, in which case you should shampoo twice too."
Rossi generally tells his patients they should wash their hair once or twice per week. But if you've had chemical treatments that can make your hair drier — such as bleach, perms or relaxers — you might want to wash it less than once weekly to avoid breaking or brittle hair or split ends, he said.

People with oily hair or who use hair care products daily should consider washing their hair once every 1–2 days. People with dry hair can wash their hair less frequently.

Reslan explains that you can't effectively cleanse your scalp without double cleansing: You need the first shampoo to break up all the build-up, and the second to actually wash it all away.
Rinsing and repeating isn't necessary for most people, but the directions are still printed on most shampoo bottles. This may be a holdover from the industry's early days.
Giving your curls the double conditioning treatment will help them retain moisture better than the traditional shampoo-then-condition process. If you've found co-washing doesn't work on your unique curl texture and style, this is a great option that's somewhere between traditional washing and co-washing.
