In Legends, Revan was a Jedi Knight who broke away from the Jedi Order, became a Dark Lord of the Sith, and formed a Sith Empire that waged war against the Order and the Galactic Republic. While experiencing amnesia, the former Sith was retrained as a Jedi to confront the Sith Empire, Revan's own creation.
As the first Dark Lord of the Sith, Ajunta Pall founded the first Sith Empire and expanded it onto other worlds. The Sith took over the planet Ziost and created it as their capital and as Pall's new home. Pall eventually died after serving the Empire for many decades, but his Empire lived on.
Why did he become a Sith? By force - SWTOR's Reason - Revan and Malak were overconfident and faced the Emperor alone. They were turned to the Dark Side by Force to claim the Star Forge for Vitiate. Later, they betrayed Vitiate and used it for themselves.
Darth Revan's Sith Empire was a revived faction of the Sith Order founded by the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Revan, and his apprentice, Darth Malak, as a dark side organization in direct opposition to the Galactic Republic and its Jedi defenders.
The child who would be remembered as Revan was eventually discovered to be Force-sensitive and was accepted into the Jedi Order. The Jedi Master Kreia claimed to have been his first teacher in the ways of the Force.
Affiliation(s) Revan was a Sith Lord and the namesake of the Sith Eternal army's 3rd Legion. Since the history of the Sith was kept hidden from the galaxy, only Sith cultists knew the significance of Revan's name.
Ezra Bridger (Darth Revan)
Revan Skywalker was a Jedi Knight and twin brother of Cade Skywalker. His father was Kol Skywalker and his mother was Morrigan Corde. He was apprenticed to Jedi Master K'Kruhk. To distinguish himself from his older brother Cade, Revan would dye his hair black.
Revan has incredible will, which was what allowed him to endure centuries of torture from Vitiate, though he was not unscarred. His mind started to become twisted between the light and dark sides and after his light side left him, Revan was completely fueled by anger and hate.

Darth Malak betrays Darth Revan and becomes Dark Lord of the Sith. Force bond forged between Revan and Bastila Shan.
After Revan was freed from his prison he reacquired the mask and wore it once more, until he was confronted by a Sith strike team at The Foundry. The mask was damaged during his defeat, with a deep vertical scratch scarring the left part of the mask and crossing the eye slit.
Revan would go on to teach Anakin everything he knew about the force including techniqes he learned from his long time friend Meetra Surik also known in the history books as the Jedi Exile. Through this training Anakin would learn how to use both the light and dark sides of the force without being influenced by them.
Vaner Shan was the son of Revan and Bastila Shan, two famous Jedi Knights and heroes of the Jedi Civil War that was fought between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire.

SPOILERS AHEAD for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker!
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has officially made Darth Revan from BioWare's Knights of the Old Republic canon, as a legion of Sith Troopers were named after him.
Although Revan was never officially classified as a Gray Jedi, he represents someone who constantly straddled the line between the light side and the dark side. He was a Jedi who refused to follow the Council's orders to remain out of the Mandalorian Wars, and instead led the Republic to victory.
The only canon name he has is Revan. There isn't any canon name for him after he has his memory wiped. There is his alies "Avner" that he uses in the Revan novel, but that is it.
Following the Jedi Civil War, legendary Jedi Knights Revan and Bastila Shan were married.
