Lily Potter had two parents without any magical ability—i.e., Muggles. Lily's sister, Petunia, does not have the ability either. Hermione is one of Harry's best friends and is a powerful witch. She has parents who are Muggles, meaning they do not possess magical ability.
Rowling says Lily's parents died a “normal muggle death” which must have been within the 10 years or so of Lily attending Hogwarts and marrying James Potter, however, aside from dying normally there is no more information about when or how they died.
Overview. Harry James Potter is the primary character in the book series by J.K. Rowling. His father, James, was the only child born to a pure-blood wizard family, while his mother, Lily, was a muggle-born witch, meaning both her parents were non-magical.
Lily's parents were Muggles, as was her sister Petunia. It is very likely that the Evanses have at least one wizarding ancestor, given that Muggle-born wizards are usually descended from Squibs whose descendants lose all notion of their wizarding lineage, and whose wizarding power resurfaces several generations later.
The fan asked the author if Aunt Petunia was a Squib (a non-magical person who is born to at least one magical parent) and Rowling replied: "Good question. No, she is not, she is not a Squib. She is a Muggle.
Figg is a Squib and a member of the Order of the Phoenix. Apparently, she was stationed to live near Harry in order to keep an eye on him and the Dursleys.
From sisters to strangers
No doubt Petunia would have been saddened by the news of Lily's death but those complicated emotions – grief, regret and unresolved jealousy – were probably buried in the distractions of housework, gossip and pandering to her son Dudley's every whim.
Because to a pureblood fanatic like Bellatrix, Harry is a Mudblood because one of his parents (Lily Evans) was a Muggleborn. Anyone with Muggle ancestry is one, including Snape since his father was a Muggle (Tobias).
Because Lily (according to them) had the nerve to not fall in love with her former childhood friend, Severus Snape and marry that no-good-evil-spoiled-rich-brat James Potter.
A doe. And in his final battle with Lord Voldemort, Harry explained the significance of this to his adversary, and to us: 'Snape's Patronus was a doe,' said Harry, 'the same as my mother's, because he loved her for nearly all of his life, from the time when they were children'.
While we know Voldemort killed Lily, he did give her a choice. If she stepped aside and allowed him to murder Harry, he would spare her. Lily refused and sacrificed herself to save her son. That action (and Lily's love) was what gave Harry protection from Voldemort's Killing Curse.
That's right, Snape called Lily a mudblood, the worst possible thing you can call a witch with muggle parents. Granted, Snape said it in the heat of the moment while fighting against James and his entire group of Marauders, but there are no takebacks from something like that.
Lily and James were recruited to become Death Eaters
But the author also told The Leaky Cauldron's "PotterCast" podcast in 2007 that Voldemort tried to recruit Muggle-born Lily Potter, along with James, to join the group.
Apparently Petunia arranged the funeral for Lily and James, choosing for them to be buried in Godrics Hollow. Petunia was the only member left of Liliy's and James' family so it was left for her to do.
'Remember my last'
Petunia's disdain for Harry was most likely born from a long-standing jealousy of her magical sister, Lily. A Howler from Dumbledore, addressed to Petunia, said 'Remember my last' – no doubt referring to the letter which he left with baby Harry, on the doorstep of Privet Drive.
When she married Vernon, she didn't want Lily to be a bridesmaid because she was tired of being overshadowed by her. And as children, she called Lily a 'freak' because she was upset that she didn't have the same gifts.
Speaking of Lily, James doesn't treat her any better than he does Snape, he constantly harasses her and stalks her every chance he gets. James mentally abused Lily by threatening to hex her when she stands up for Snape to him, saying this abhorrent quote: "Ah, Evans. Don't make me hex you."
And although she was one of the few people at Hogwarts who was entirely unimpressed by him, her fellow Gryffindor James Potter was also deeply infatuated with her as well. Obviously Lily ultimately chose James Potter over Severus Snape, and Lily and James got married and had their only child, Harry Potter.
Now, this has made the audience question why James Potter's death didn't protect his family, and the answer is simple: he was determined to fight Voldemort, knowing well that he could be killed, and the Dark Lord never asked him to step aside.
In Deathly Hallows, Hermione faced a real test of her physical and psychological stamina. After being on the run from a bunch of Snatchers, the gang were taken to Malfoy Manor, where Bellatrix proceeded to torture Hermione using the Cruciatus Curse.
Later in the book, Harry, Ron, and Hermione use a stray hair of Bellatrix's to disguise Hermione as Bellatrix using Polyjuice Potion, in order to gain access to the Lestrange's Gringotts vault.
A Professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Snape is hostile to Harry due to his resemblance to his father James Potter, who bullied Snape during their time together at Hogwarts. As the series progresses, Snape's character becomes more layered and enigmatic.
Her last line there is, "You didn't just lose a mother that night in Godric's Hollow, you know. I lost a sister." Since Aunt Petunia usually prefers not to acknowledge Harry's mother at all, it's a surprisingly sweet moment. In the book, she uses her last words to say "Well — goodbye" to Harry.
Petunia never showed any love and affection at all towards Harry because he reminded her of Lily and the wizarding world. She treated him as a waste of space, giving him the cupboard under the stairs at first and making him do all the chores. She, along with Vernon, ignored most of Harry's birthdays.
Petunia resented her "freak" sister for being a witch, and was drawn ever-closer into the bland lifestyle of her husband. Vernon struggled to accept that such people existed in his world of order and problems were sparked once introduced to each other.
