Admission Criteria: Minimum age is 16. Have graduated from high school and be 18 years old or older when you graduate from the language school. Note: Students must have completed 12 years of elementary/secondary education before applying to university in Japan.
Most bachelor's degree programs in Japan take four years to complete, which means that students who enroll in a bachelor's degree program right after high school can graduate at the age of 22.
The usual schooling in Japan is 6 years of primary school (from the age of 7 to 12), 3 years of junior high school(from the age of 13 to 15), 3 years of senior high school (from the age of 16 to 18), and 4 years of university education(from the age of 19 to 22).
In general, kids have to be at school by 8:45 am. School finishes around 3:15 pm, so they have to be in school for about six and a half hours every day from Monday to Friday. However, most kids also attend after-school clubs, and many also go to juku (cram school) in the evening to do extra studying.
In Japan, the legal adult age is 20. Japanese law prohibits individuals under the age of 20 to drink alcohol or smoke. Regardless of age, you must not force anyone to drink or smoke as it may cause serious health and social consequences.
Japanese education system
The education system in Japan is called the “6-3-3-4” system. Elementary school is for 6 years, junior high school is for 3 years, high school is for 3 years, and university is for 4 years, so it is called “6-3-3-4.”
At most schools, summer vacation covers the 40-odd days from July 20 to August 31; winter and spring vacation both last around 10 days, from December 26 to around January 6 and March 25 to around April 5, respectively. The new school year starts in April, at the end of spring vacation.
High School (16 – 18 years old)
High schools in Japan provide a three-year education for students which starts when they are 16 years old and lasts until the age of 18. One of the biggest differences between junior high school and high school is whether taking an entrance exam is required or not.
Children start school at age 6 with the school year being divided into three terms. The first term goes from April to late July, second term goes from September to late December, and the last term goes from January to late March.
Part-time Jobs
If you want to work part-time in Japan, be aware that the law imposes an age limit. In Japan, you are allowed to work part-time after the earliest start of the fiscal year (March 31) after you turn 15.

A typical school day
School hours are generally from 8.45am to 3.00pm Monday to Friday. In a typical school day, there are five to eight lessons, ranging from 40 minutes to one hour. There are two breaks in the school day – a morning tea break (recess) and a lunch break, both of which are supervised by teachers.
Japanese school rules emphasize a lot the natural appearance of the students. Japanese high school girls cannot do any makeup, hair dye, paint their nails, or wear jewellery. They believe that all these things distract students from their studies, and when they are in school, the only thing they do is study.
It could also be seen that students tend to sleep longer than company workers. Male company workers indicated to need the least amount of sleep, averaging 6 hours and 9 minutes, while the average student indicated to sleep for 6 hours and 24 minutes.
Universities in Japan charge an admission fee in the first year, tuition fees, and some other minor fees per semester. Other than the tuition fees, you will need approximately 100000-150000 Yen per month to cover your living costs in Japan during your studies.

University. At university, students no longer need to wear uniforms at school as university is where people can get more freedom and selections, but in other circumstances like job hunting, dressing in an appropriate way is critically important as your dressing also represent you from others' perspectives.
The age of adulthood in Japan was lowered from 20 to 18 on April 1, 2022. This makes it possible for 18- or 19-year-olds to sign a smartphone contract or take out a loan without parental consent, but also means that they need to take responsibility for such decisions.
This revision means that 18-year-olds will be punished more strictly if they commit a criminal offense. The juvenile act applies only to minors, and now 18-year-olds are not considered minors in Japan. This also means that your face and name can be printed in the media if you're at least 18 years old.
Public schools in Japan have classes five days a week, from Monday to Friday. There are also schools that have classes on Saturday. In junior high and high schools, there are six class periods each day, typically lasting 50 minutes for each.
