The World Health Organisation believes that most developed world countries characterise old age starting at 60 years and above.
The American Geriatric Society and the World Health Organization define the oldest-old as individuals aged over 80 years, while the British Geriatrics Society uses 85 years as a threshold. In recent publications, the cut off was fixed at 85 or 90 years and over [1,2,3].
This report focuses on older Australians—generally those aged 65 and over, unless otherwise specified. For older Indigenous Australians, the age range 50 and over is used, reflecting the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians and the lower proportion of Indigenous people aged 65 and over.
The United States' older adult population can thus, be divided into three life-stage subgroups: the young-old (approximately 65 to 74 years old), the middle-old (ages 75 to 84 years old), and the old-old (over age 85).
Late adulthood encompasses a long period, from age 60 potentially to age 120– sixty years!
At 30 June 2020: More than half of older people were aged 65–74 (56%, 2.4 million people). 3 in 10 were aged 75–84 (31%, 1.3 million). Around 1 in 8 were aged 85 and over (13%, 528,000) (ABS 2020b) (Figure 1.2).
For statistical and public administrative purposes, however, old age is frequently defined as 60 or 65 years of age or older. Old age has a dual definition. It is the last stage in the life processes of an individual, and it is an age group or generation comprising a segment of the oldest members of a population.

Men often gain weight until about age 55, and then begin to lose weight later in life. This may be related to a drop in the male sex hormone testosterone. Women usually gain weight until age 65, and then begin to lose weight.
End of Life
End of life is the last stage in the aging process. At this point, the senior is nearing their final days. Some older adults choose to stop receiving medical treatment and enter hospice care, and others wish to continue receiving the same services.
We are considered to be in late adulthood from the time we reach our mid-sixties until death. This is the longest developmental stage across the lifespan, and a growing age group. By 2030, 1 in 6 people in the world will be aged 60 years or over (WHO, 2021).
Which Australian states have the oldest population? Among Australia's states and territories, Tasmania stands out as clearly the oldest, with over 20% aged 65+ and 8.4% aged 75+.
Australia's population has grown older, with the median age increasing from 32.4 years at 30 June 1991 to 38.2 years at 30 June 2021.
90-somethings today
In 2016 in Australia, 56,058 men and 117,690 women were aged in their 90s. While women outnumber men by about two to one, the number of male nonagenarians is increasing much faster than the number of women (a rate of 99% compared to 55% in the past decade).
