If you breath in helium (six times lighter than the air we breath), the pitch of your voice goes up. However, if you breath sulfur hexafluoride (six time heavier than normal air), your voice sounds low.
A person with a deep voice has thicker vocal cords and larger cavities for the sound to resonate. A person with a raspy voice may have vocal cords that have nodules or polyps on them.
Gases Which Deepen Your Voice
The weightier gases like nitrous oxide serve to lower the voice. Two other well-known gases appear to have this effect: Sulfur Hexafluoride: This gas has the exact opposite effect of helium. Its high density (6.261 kg/m³) shortens the sound waves.
Inhaling helium makes the higher-pitched tones resonate more in the vocal tract, amplifying them so they are louder in the mix. At the same time, it makes the lower tones resonate less in the vocal tract. The two effects combine to create a Chipmunk-like, flat sound.
Like our newest member, I have also experienced changes in my voice that happen when my oxygen levels are low or happen when I try to hold a longer conversation. My voice becomes raspy and hoarse and I feel a constriction around my throat.
Sulfur Hexafluoride Gas makes you sound like Darth Vader.
Yup, it lowers your voice. Why? Because the depth of your voice effectively comes from the size and tension of your vocal chords. Hydrated vocal chords are bigger and therefore result in a lower note.
The Changing Larynx
As the body goes through puberty, the larynx grows larger and thicker. It happens in both boys and girls, but the change is more evident in boys. Girls' voices only deepen by a couple of tones and the change is barely noticeable. Boys' voices, however, start to get significantly deeper.
It used to be thought that voice pitch in mammals relates to body size, but that is no longer believed top be the case. McElligott pointed out that you can have big men with higher-pitched voices, or smaller men with lower-pitched voices, so pitch is not always an indication of body size.
Research confirms that deep voices give men an aura of power and sexual allure. Men with low, resonant voices are more likely to be perceived as attractive, masculine, respectable, and dominant.
Women in that study also found men with deeper voices to be more attractive, but when the results were compared with the men's semen quality, they found that sperm concentrations were lower in men with lower voices.
A study of how people respond to voices shows that men react far more strongly to a deeply pitched male voice than women do. And humans, it seems, have the biggest sex-based differences in voice pitch of any primate. Women's voices are far higher and men's far lower, the team at Penn State University found.
The deepness of a voice is primarily determined by the length and thickness of the vocal cords. Longer and thicker vocal cords produce lower, James Earl Jones-like pitches. So, if you want a deeper voice, you just need to thicken and lengthen your vocal cords.
Before you reach puberty, your larynx is pretty small and your vocal cords are kind of small and thin. That's why your voice is higher than an adult's. As you go through puberty, the larynx gets bigger and the vocal cords lengthen and thicken, so your voice gets deeper.
The only permanent and confirmed ways to deepen your voice are hormonal therapy and surgery, and those are a bit over-the-top for people who just want a slightly lower pitch.
When you go through puberty, your voice deepens. Men's voices often deepen up to an octave, while women's voices usually move about three tones lower. After puberty and well into older adulthood, some people's voices may change, but not everyone's. Men's voices tend to go up in pitch.
The inability to drain fluids while we are lying down could also contribute to another symptom of morning voice. Often, our voices feel and sound a little hoarse, making us perceive our voice as lower. This could be down to thickened excess mucus that has settled on the vocal cords overnight.
* Breathing Sulfur Hexafluoride can irritate the nose and throat. * Breathing Sulfur Hexafluoride may irritate the lungs causing coughing and/or shortness of breath. Higher exposures can cause a build-up of fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema), a medical emergency, with severe shortness of breath.
Is helium really that dangerous? It can be. Breathing in pure helium deprives the body of oxygen, as if you were holding your breath. If you couldn't breathe at all, you'd start to die in minutes—as soon as your body exhausted the supply of oxygen stored in the blood.
The gas doesn't change the rate of vibration of your vocal cords (more correctly, your vocal fold).
Beef has a high level of testosterone which is exactly what one requires for deepening the voice. Also, you might opt for eating chocolates as much as you can. Drink ample water and milk before you start practicing your deep voice.
Basses. The name says it all. These men make up the bottom of the musical staff, and their incredibly deep tones are a rare but essential part of music making. Basses do for low notes what sopranos do for high notes.
In general, women speak at a higher pitch—about an octave higher than men. An adult woman's average range is from 165 to 255 Hz, while a man's is 85 to 155 Hz (see sources). Men's voices are generally deeper because the surge of testosterone released during puberty causes their vocal cords to elongate and thicken.
