In the lead are Cuvier's beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) that can dive from the ocean's surface down to 2,992m (9,816ft) thanks to adaptations that help them conserve oxygen and survive extreme pressure .
The Mariana Trench is deeper than Mount Everest is tall and anything living there has to survive the cold water and extremely high pressure. Some animals, including the deep-sea crustaceans Hirondellea gigas , do live there —and they have recently had a human visitor.
The Mariana Trench, in the Pacific Ocean, is the deepest location on Earth. According to the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the United States has jurisdiction over the trench and its resources. Scientists use a variety of technologies to overcome the challenges of deep-sea exploration and explore the Trench.
These new species add up fast – you see, there are 300,000,000 square kilometers (115,830,647 square miles – almost 30 Europes or 431 Texases) of mud deeper than 1000 m in the ocean. The end result of all this is a conclusion of 300,000,000 species living in the mud at the bottom of the deep ocean.
Last year an expedition to the Mariana Trench made history by conducting the deepest crewed dive ever completed as it descended 10,927 metres into the Challenger Deep.
The deepest point ever reached by man is 35,858 feet below the surface of the ocean, which happens to be as deep as water gets on earth. To go deeper, you'll have to travel to the bottom of the Challenger Deep, a section of the Mariana Trench under the Pacific Ocean 200 miles southwest of Guam.
The bottom of the deep sea has several features that contribute to the diversity of this habitat. The main features are mid-oceanic ridges, hydrothermal vents, mud volcanoes, seamounts, canyons and cold seeps. Carcasses of large animals also contribute to habitat diversity.
The largest underwater species is the blue whale, which weighs 242,500 pounds on average and has a length of 79 feet. While these are the average weight and length for the species, much larger ones have been spotted from whale-watching boats.
“The intense pressures in the deep ocean make it an extremely difficult environment to explore.” Although you don't notice it, the pressure of the air pushing down on your body at sea level is about 15 pounds per square inch. If you went up into space, above the Earth's atmosphere, the pressure would decrease to zero.
Only three people have ever done that, and one was a U.S. Navy submariner. In the Pacific Ocean, somewhere between Guam and the Philippines, lies the Marianas Trench, also known as the Mariana Trench. At 35,814 feet below sea level, its bottom is called the Challenger Deep — the deepest point known on Earth.
Even a weighted body will normally float to the surface after three or four days, exposing it to sea birds and buffeting from the waves. Putrefaction and scavenging creatures will dismember the corpse in a week or two and the bones will sink to the seabed.
Additionally, the sub will also likely see a modification to move the reactor water intakes. Most nuclear submarines cannot rest on the seabed floor for long, as silt and other debris can block the intakes that draw in water to regulate the reactor's temperature.
Just 5% of Earth's landscape is untouched.
The "mysterious" deep sea predator, which has a gelatinous body, was spotted lurking 1469 metres below the surface of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument. Researchers believe the photogenic creature is a not-yet-described species of jellyfish within the Bathykorus genus.
Killer Whales
When you think of top ocean predators, you probably think of sharks. Great white sharks, to be exact. But the true ruler of the sea is the killer whale. Killer whales are apex predators, which means they have no natural predators.
While the blue whale is the overall-largest creature of the sea, the lion's mane jellyfish goes to the top of the list for being the longest.
The crack is called a rift and the constant filling of the widening crack is called seafloor spreading. Nearly all of the areas of Planet Earth under the oceans have been formed in this way.
Light in the ocean decreases with depth, with minimal light penetrating between 200-1,000 meters (656-3,280 feet) and depths below 1,000 meters receiving no light from the surface.
Recent expeditions have found myriad creatures living out their lives at the bottom of the sea-floor. Xenophyophores, amphipods, and holothurians (not the names of alien species, I promise) all call the trench home.
That means that most people can dive up to a maximum of 60 feet safely. For most swimmers, a depth of 20 feet (6.09 meters) is the most they will free dive. Experienced divers can safely dive to a depth of 40 feet (12.19 meters) when exploring underwater reefs.
The deepest part of the ocean is called the Challenger Deep and is located beneath the western Pacific Ocean in the southern end of the Mariana Trench, which runs several hundred kilometers southwest of the U.S. territorial island of Guam. Challenger Deep is approximately 10,935 meters (35,876 feet) deep.
The North Sentinel Island in the Bay of Bengal is arguably one of the most isolated places on earth, both through remote location and inaccessible population. The small island of around 60 square km is located off the Norwest coast of Indonesia and has been far from explored.
There are still some places on Earth that have not been explored much by people. The ocean is one of these places. It covers more than 70% of Earth's surface, and it contains many types of ecosystems.
In fact, 65% of our planet remains unexplored, most of which lies beneath the oceans. Literally anything could be down there, and we wouldn't know.
