Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)
Norepinephrine helps boost your energy levels and focus. So SNRIs can help stabilize your mood and make you feel more energized. The most common SNRIs prescribed to treat anxiety are venlafaxine extended-release (Effexor XR) and duloxetine (Cymbalta).
Benzodiazepines like clonazepam (Klonopin) and alprazolam (Xanax) promote sleep and relieve anxiety. This medicine can also help with muscle spasms and restless leg syndrome.
Beta blockers
The beta blocker Propranolol is approved for social anxiety. Pros: You can take it to reduce anxiety before stage performances or public speaking. It doesn't make you sleepy. Cons: It can cause low blood pressure or dizziness.
Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa, and Lexapro, are just a few brands of serotonin that we prescribe for those who suffer from depression, and/or anxiety disorder. There is evidence that these drugs can also improve premenopausal symptoms, even a role in the treatment of obesity and parkinson's disease.
Types of amphetamines: amphetamine, methamphetamine, dextroamphetamine. The different types of amphetamines—and related drugs such as methylphenidate (e.g., Ritalin)—are stimulant drugs. Stimulants speed up the central nervous system. They act like adrenaline, a hormone that is one of the body's natural stimulants.
Stimulants. Improve fatigue and concentration. These drugs include methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta).
SSRIs are considered the first-line treatment for anxiety disorders and often have fewer adverse effects than other medications.
Benzodiazepines (also known as tranquilizers) are the most widely prescribed type of medication for anxiety. Drugs such as Xanax (alprazolam), Klonopin (clonazepam), Valium (diazepam), and Ativan (lorazepam) work quickly, typically bringing relief within 30 minutes to an hour.
Prozac (fluoxetine) and Wellbutrin (bupropion) are examples of “energizing” antidepressants; whereas Paxil (paroxetine) and Celexa (citalopram) tend to be more sedating.
Some common side effects of escitalopram (Lexapro) include nausea, trouble sleeping, and drowsiness.
The official name for this phenomenon is adrenal fatigue. Anxiety is like being on high alert. Your body is preparing you to fight or flee; and so it is flooded with energy so that you can respond to a threat. Then, when that adrenaline runs its course, your body goes through a crash that can leave you feeling drained.
The most popular stimulants prescribed for chronic fatigue syndrome include: Ritalin and Concerta, which contain methylphenidate. Dexedrine, which contains dextroamphetamine. Adderall, which contains amphetamine and dextroamphetamine.
The most prominent of anti-anxiety drugs for the purpose of immediate relief are those known as benzodiazepines; among them are alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin), chlordiazepoxide (Librium), diazepam (Valium), and lorazepam (Ativan).
Sertraline is used to treat depression, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), and a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (premenstrual dysphoric disorder). This medication may improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level and may ...
Antipsychotics are commonly prescribed to help with symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, or racing thoughts, but can also be prescribed for individuals without those symptoms. Some antipsychotics are considered mood stabilizers because they, too, even out the highs and lows.
The anxiolytic effects of benzodiazepines begin soon after oral or parenteral application. In contrast to antidepressants, benzodiazepines do not lead to initially increased jitteriness and insomnia. In the United States, 55% to 94% of patients with anxiety disorders are treated with benzodiazepines.
The FDA has approved a phase 2b study of an optimized form of LSD for the treatment of anxiety. The drug, called MM-120, is being developed by MindMed and is intended to treat generalized anxiety disorders and other mental conditions. MindMed is expected to begin clinical trials in 2022.
Zoloft (sertraline)
Zoloft is another SSRI antidepressant that can also treat depression and certain types of anxiety. It causes side effects similar to those of Prozac. Some of these side effects go away after a month of taking these medications, but others can last longer.
SSRIs and SNRIs, the first-line medications for anxiety, are considered safer alternatives to non-controlled substances. Anxiety disorders are the most common group of psychiatric disorders in both adults and adolescents.
While there is no one best anxiety medication for weight loss, there are a few antidepressants that are not associated with weight gain. These include: Bupropion (Wellbutrin; see Important Safety Information) Fluoxetine (Prozac; see Important Safety Information)
The majority of patients that take anti-anxiety medications will experience weight gain partially and fully due to side effects. An individual administering this medication could encounter constipation, bloating, fatigue, and as a result, weight gain.
If an SSRI is considered indispensable in patients with marked fatigue (e.g., because of significant anxiety), some suggest that the best choice is sertraline, because of its mild dopaminergic action.
This is because antidepressants can increase your energy and motivation levels, which may be very low while you are depressed. Early in your treatment, you may experience more energy and motivation before your feelings of depression have started to lift. This might mean you have enough energy act on suicidal urges.
Stimulants. If necessary, a GP or specialist may prescribe a type of medicine known as a stimulant, such as modafinil, pitolisant, sodium oxybate or solriamfetol. These medicines stimulate your central nervous system, which can help keep you awake during the day. They're usually taken as tablets every morning.
