Most healthy women receive two ultrasound scans during pregnancy. "The first is, ideally, in the first trimester to confirm the due date, and the second is at 18-22 weeks to confirm normal anatomy and the sex of the baby," explains Mendiola.
Most women will be advised to have at least two ultrasound scans during their pregnancy — the first and second trimester scans.
A third trimester ultrasound measures the size of the fetus to ensure the fetus is not too big (macrosomia) or too small (growth restriction). It measures the amount of amniotic fluid. There can be too much amniotic fluid (polyhydramnios) or too little amniotic fluid (oligohydramnios).
3D scanning is the process of analyzing a real-world object or environment to collect three dimensional data of its shape and possibly its appearance (e.g. color). The collected data can then be used to construct digital 3D models.
B- scan: If the A- scan - concept is combined with movement of the probe along the surface, a B- scan is the result. It depicts the acoustical side projection of the object, Fig. 4.39. C- scan: Via C- scan are echo amplitudes recorded in relation to probe position.
There are two main types of ultrasound used in ophthalmologic practice currently, A-Scan and B-scan. In A-scan, or time-amplitude scan, sound waves are generated at 8 MHz and converted into spikes that correspond with tissue interface zones. In B-scan, or brightness amplitude scan, sound waves are generated at 10 MHz.
This is ultrasound after 28 weeks, commonly much later. It may also be referred to as a growth scan or late Pregnancy Ultrasound.
A 4D ultrasound is similar to a 3D ultrasound, but the image shows movement like a video would. So in a 4D sonogram, you'd see your baby doing things in real time (like opening and closing his eyes and sucking his thumb).
When can I take this ultrasound? It is recommended only once during in pregnancy: after 20 weeks and up to 30 weeks of gestation at the most.
Why two scans at these times? “Scans at these times in your pregnancy are based on research and evidence about important stages of the pregnancy when the developing baby can be assessed for wellbeing, and when other screening tests may be offered,” Tina explains.
Ultrasound is used during pregnancy to check the baby's development, the presence of a multiple pregnancy and to help pick up any abnormalities. The ultrasound scan isn't 100 per cent accurate, but the advantages of the test are that it's non-invasive, painless and safe for both mother and unborn baby.

So Why Is it So Important to Drink Water Before an Ultrasound? Dehydration can cause your urine to be concentrated, which can lead to inaccurate results. In addition, dehydration can also cause the liver to produce less bile, which can make it more difficult to see the gallbladder on an ultrasound.
High risk pregnancy. If your pregnancy is considered to be higher risk you will be offered additional scans during the third trimester of your pregnancy. These will be performed at 28, 31, 34, 37 and 40-weeks' gestation.
You will have at least two ultrasounds during your early and middle pregnancy, and in the later parts of your high-risk pregnancy, you may have ultrasounds as often as once a week based on your health needs and situation.
4D Scan. A 3D/4D High-Definition ultrasound scan can be performed to see your baby's face and limbs from 26 to 32 weeks of pregnancy.
It's used to see how far along in your pregnancy you are and check your baby's development. The scan may also be part of a screening test for Down's syndrome. Your midwife or doctor will book you a dating scan appointment. It will usually take place at your local hospital ultrasound department.
During the third trimester of pregnancy, ultrasound is commonly performed in patients that present both asymptomatically or with symptoms. There are currently no major guidelines or protocols to standardize the use of ultrasound at this stage of pregnancy.
Ideally for labor, the baby is positioned head-down, facing the mother's back with the chin tucked to its chest and the back of the head ready to enter the pelvis. This position is called cephalic presentation. Most babies settle into this position within the 32nd to 36th weeks of pregnancy.
This detailed ultrasound scan, sometimes called the mid-pregnancy or anomaly scan, is usually carried out when you're between 18 and 21 weeks pregnant. The 20-week screening scan is offered to everybody, but you do not have to have it if you do not want to.
Most pregnant women typically only get two ultrasounds, one at the beginning of pregnancy and one about halfway through. Other women may have three or more ultrasounds done depending on a number of factors.
A CT scan may be used to help diagnose disease, plan treatment, or find out how well treatment is working. Also called CAT scan, computed tomography scan, computerized axial tomography scan, and computerized tomography.
The M-scan mode is used to record the motion of internal organs, as in the study of heart dysfunction. Greater resolution is obtained in ultrasonic imaging by using higher frequencies—i.e., shorter wavelengths.
C-scan uses a projection of the ultrasonic data onto a plan view of the component being tested to create an image. This mapping technique is usually utilized for corrosion or thickness mapping, as well as visualization of cracks and inclusions in the component.
