The full name of this medicine is betahistine dihydrochloride. It's thought to work by reducing build-up of fluid in the inner ear. This helps to reduce how often you get Ménière's disease symptoms and to make them milder. It comes as tablets and is available on prescription only.
It works by increasing the effect of a natural substance called histamine in your inner ear. Antihistamines work by stopping histamine affecting the cells in your body. They're often used to relieve symptoms of allergies, such as hay fever, hives, conjunctivitis and reactions to insect bites or stings.
Betahistine is thought to work by increasing the blood flow around the inner ear. This reduces the amount of fluid in the inner ear and prevents symptoms from developing.
You may need to take betahistine for a long time, such as several months or years, to prevent the symptoms of Ménière's disease.
Betaserc used in treatment of balance system disorders lessens the insensitivity of vertigo, gait disturbances and nausea/vomiting. It does not affect hearing loss or tinnitus.
Anxiety symptoms
The repeated-measures ANOVA showed a significant effect of time (P<0.00001), indicating that both high-dose and low-dose betahistine could significantly reduce the HARS score.
Increases in vestibular blood flow and decreases in blood pressure were observed in response to betahistine infusions.
Stomach upset, nausea, and headache may occur. This medication may also rarely cause drowsiness.
Some medicines and betahistine affect each other and can increase your chance of side effects. Tell your pharmacist or doctor if you're taking: medicines called MAO inhibitors, used to treat depression or Parkinson's disease. antihistamines for allergies such as hay fever.
Few studies had compared the effect of betahistine and metformin before. According to our study, although betahistine group failed to decrease the body weight significantly, it prevented further weight gain with a decreasing tendency.
Results. Epley maneuver, alone or combined with betahistine or placebo, was found to be very effective with a primary success rate of 86.2%.
Betahistine is effective in improving vertigo-associated symptoms, with longer treatment periods leading to greater improvements; however, it is not known whether these effects persist after treatment cessation.
Betahistine is not approved in the United States. Interestingly, it was approved in the U.S. in the 1960s but after 5 years the approval was withdrawn due to a lack of evidence for its efficacy.
Swallow the tablets with water. Take the tablet with or after a meal. However, Betahistine can cause mild stomach problems (listed in Section 4). Taking Betahistine with food can help reduce stomach problems.
Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, or change the dosage, without checking with your doctor. Do not use this medicine to treat any other complaints unless your doctor or pharmacist tells you to. Do not give this medicine to anyone else, even if they have the same condition as you.
Betahistine is the analogue of histamine with weaker agonistic effect on histamine H1 receptors and stronger effect on histamine H3 receptors, while Cinnarizine has more effective effect on H1 receptors.
Ginkgo biloba
It works by managing blood flow to the brain to relieve dizziness and balance issues. A study reported in the International Journal of Otolaryngology finds Ginkgo biloba is just as effective as the medication betahistine in managing vertigo.

Vitamin D, vitamin B12, gingko biloba and ginger are effective remedies to feel more balanced and overcome vertigo symptoms. It's always a good idea to consult with a doctor or pharmacist before starting any new supplements.

Studies did not show differences in tinnitus loudness, severity of tinnitus symptoms or side effects between participants receiving betahistine and participants receiving a placebo[1].
Anti-vertigo or anti-nausea medications may relieve your symptoms, but they can also make you drowsy. Other medications, such as gentamicin (an antibiotic) or corticosteroids may be used. Although gentamicin may reduce dizziness better than corticosteroids, it occasionally causes permanent hearing loss.
SERC is used to treat a disorder of your inner ear. This disorder may include one or more of the following symptoms, in one or both ears: ringing in the ears (tinnitus), loss of clear hearing and problems with balance (vertigo).
Betahistine is a vestibular suppressant3 and hence decreases sensory conflicts in the vestibular system when used after a vestibular assault. Hence like all other vestibular sedatives, its use should be restricted to a maximum of 3 to 5 days.
