The largest dead zone in the world lies in the Arabian Sea, covering almost the entire 63,700-square mile Gulf of Oman. The second largest sits in the Gulf of Mexico in the United States, averaging almost 6,000 square miles in size.
The Baltic Sea is home to seven of the world's 10 largest marine dead zones. Increased runoff from agricultural fertilizers and sewage has sped up the eutrophication process. Overfishing of Baltic cod has intensified the problem.
The Gulf's dead zone is considered the world's largest, but it isn't the only area with a dead zone. There's one in the Chesapeake Bay and another in the Baltic Sea. There are about 500 coastal areas that have these dead zones at some part of the year.
"Dead zone" is a more common term for hypoxia, which refers to a reduced level of oxygen in the water. At 8,482 square kilometers (3,275 square miles), the 2022 hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico is the 8th smallest ever measured in the 36-year record, measured from July 25 to August 1, 2022.
Nitrogen and phosphorous from agricultural runoff are the primary culprits, but sewage, vehicular and industrial emissions and even natural factors also play a role in the development of dead zones.
The ocean is generally divided into three zones which are named based on the amount of sunlight they receive: the euphotic, dysphotic, and aphotic zones.
The open ocean is divided up into three life zones, the euphotic zone, the bathyal zone and the abyssal zone. The subdivision is based on the penetration of sunlight. The euphotic zone is the upper oceanic zone, where producer species produce oxygen.
The largest "dead zone" on the planet is the entire Black Sea below a depth of about 150 meters.
In the Northern Gulf of Mexico, anthropogenic nutrients delivered by the Mississippi River annually produce a dead zone as big as the state of New Jersey. These zones also occur naturally in the open ocean, with the largest found in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
Dead zones are generally caused by significant nutrient pollution, and are primarily a problem for bays, lakes and coastal waters since they receive excess nutrients from upstream sources. Excess nitrogen and phosphorus cause an overgrowth of algae in a short period of time, also called algae blooms.

The Gulf of Mexico dead zone is an area of hypoxic (link to USGS definition) (less than 2 ppm dissolved oxygen) waters at the mouth of the Mississippi River. Its area varies in size, but can cover up to 6,000-7,000 square miles.

Lastly, the deepest ocean zone is the Abyssal zone. In this zone, the water pressure is so high that the marine life that live here need to be able to withstand the pressure. The marine life that live here aren't very typical. They are most commonly described as "abnormal", or sometimes even "scary".
So it should not be a surprise that about 90% of marine life is found in the Epipelagic Zone. The Epipelagic Zone is also where water temperature can vary the most across the globe. At the surface, water can be as cold as -2 degrees Celsius near the poles.
The depths from 1,000-4,000 meters (3,300 - 13,100 feet) comprise the bathypelagic zone. Due to its constant darkness, this zone is also called the midnight zone. The only light at this depth and lower comes from the bioluminescence of the animals themselves.

Pressure increases with depth. The first and only time humans descended into the Challenger Deep was more than 50 years ago. In 1960, Jacques Piccard and Navy Lt. Don Walsh reached this goal in a U.S. Navy submersible, a bathyscaphe called the Trieste.
The deepest part of the ocean is called the Challenger Deep and is located beneath the western Pacific Ocean in the southern end of the Mariana Trench, which runs several hundred kilometers southwest of the U.S. territorial island of Guam. Challenger Deep is approximately 10,935 meters (35,876 feet) deep.
Overall, the 2021 dead zone lasted for 141 days—46 days longer than 2020. In the short-term, experts believe that several factors, including calm winds, increased precipitation and warm temperatures throughout the late summer of 2021 contributed to the larger dead zone.
