Real repentance is typically accompanied by transparency. We have a willingness and eagerness to make amends. We will do whatever it takes to make things right and to demonstrate we have changed.
First, the gospel is the Lord's plan of happiness, and repentance is designed to bring us joy. Second, true repentance is based on and flows from faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no other way. Third, true repentance involves a change of heart and not just a change of behavior.

Why does this make repentance difficult? Because blessings also imply judgment (Acts 17:30-31). I believe everyone wants to be blessed, but we've got to remember that we'll be judged too. An eternal condemnation is in play every day of life and in every decision you make.

We repent to gain forgiveness of our sins. But if Jesus Christ had not paid for our sins and died for us, we could never be forgiven. It is only through His atoning sacrifice that mercy can satisfy justice and we can have our sins cleansed from us (see Alma 34:10–16).
