Like Boomers, Millennials are a huge generation that we sometimes split into two subgroups: Early Millennials (born 1980-1987) and Recessionists (born 1988-1995).
For example, rather than looking at data from the general "millennial" demographic, it divides millennials – or "Generation Y" into "Y1" (maturing millennials, age 22 to 29 years old) and "Y2" (milestone millennials, 30 to 37 years old).
There are two types of millennials, says a generational expert: "me-llennials" and "mega-llennials." The two parts of the generation are defined, respectively, by two different life paths. One group is moving forward professionally and financially, while the other feels their life has stagnated.
Generation X is anyone born from 1965 to 1980. Baby boomers are anyone born from 1946 to 1964. Millennials are anyone born from 1981 to 1996. Generation Z is anyone born from 1997 to 2012.
Gen X: Born 1965-1980 (43-58 years old) Millennials: Born 1981-1996 (27-42 years old) Gen Z: Born 1997-2012 (11-26 years old) Gen Alpha: Born early 2010s-2025 (0-about 10 years old)
In the 2023 book Generation Alpha by Mark McCrindle, who is generally credited with coining the term, Generation Alpha is defined as "covering those born between 2010 and 2024". Definitions of Generation Z should be taken into account, however.
Generation Z was born between 1995 and 2012, whereas Millennials were born between 1981 and 1996. In 2019 the oldest Millennials turned 40, which means that they have been part of adult life for a while.
The term “Silent Generation” was first documented in a 1951 Time magazine article, which claimed that the most startling fact about this generation was its silence: “By comparison with the Flaming Youth of their fathers and mothers, today's younger generation is a still, small flame.” The generation's “silent” behavior ...
Generation Z (also known as the iGeneration, Zoomers, or Centennials) refers to those with birth years between 1995 and 2010. Generation Alpha encompasses those born between 2010 and 2025. Gen Z is the first digital native generation, while Gen Alpha is the first generation to grow up in an entirely digital world.
Generational definitions are most useful when they span a set age range and so allow meaningful comparisons across generations. That is why the generations today each span 15 years with Generation Y (Millennials) born from 1980 to 1994; Generation Z from 1995 to 2009 and Generation Alpha from 2010 to 2024.
Millennials, also known as Generation Y or Gen Y, are the demographic cohort following Generation X and preceding Generation Z.
Millennials, also known as Generation Y or the Net Generation, are the demographic cohort that directly follows Generation X. Neil Howe and William Strauss, authors of the 1991 book Generations: The History of America's Future, 1584 to 2069, are often credited with coining the term.
GENERATION Y OR THE MILLENNIALS: DIGITAL NATIVES
The revolution was shaped by the millennials or generation Y. Also known as digital natives, millennials are those born between 1982 and 1994 and technology is part of their everyday lives: all their activities are mediated by a screen.
Urban Dictionary defines millennial gray as: “The sad depressive hue of the color gray which many millennials coat their life in. The color reflects how millennials went from non-sense happiness, looking at cartoon network and Nickelodeon in the 90's to Inflation and depression in the early 2020s.”
The Greatest Generation refers to those Americans born between 1900 and 1925, many of whom fought during World War II. These individuals grew up during WWI and lived through the Great Depression and are often the parents of the Baby Boomer generation.
Before you think the Silent Generation is only about nursing homes and Medicare, consider some of the demographic's icons: Paul McCartney, Martha Stewart, Jane Fonda, Glenn Close, Robert DeNiro, Robert Redford, and Goldie Hawn – to name just a few.
The Birth Years of the Silent Generation
An often-used range, however, is 1928–1945. These years span from the beginning of the Great Depression to the end of World War II. People born during this time are also sometimes called “Radio Babies” or “Traditionalists.”
A Millennial (Generation Y) is a person born between the early 1980s and 1999. For sampling and targeting purposes, Millennial Future define a Millennial as anyone currently aged between 23 and 40 years old as of January 1, 2023 (1983-1999)
The Stolen Generations refers to a period in Australia's history where Aboriginal children were removed from their families through government policies. This happened from the mid-1800s to the 1970s.
So what do millennials do all day? They spent more time working, providing child care and taking part in educational activities than their older peers. But they spent less time than nonmillennials on household chores, civic or religious work and leisure activities.
Zillennials were born roughly between 1992 and 2002, but there isn't one consistent cut off point that experts agree on, Carr said. Ask a zillennial, though, and they might tell you who they are.
According to a recent survey of 1,300 managers, three out of four agree that Gen Z is harder to work with than other generations — so much so that 65% of employers said they have to fire them more often.
