An extremely rare 1930 Australian penny has sold for $60,000 at auction, breaking an Australian record. The coin went under the hammer over the weekend and was bought by a Western Australian bidder.
“Now the sets are being valued at $6,000. “It's purely down for people's attraction to the $2 Mars coin. To see its value increase nearly 30 fold in five years is beyond ridiculous.”
A list of valuable 50c Australian coins is fairly short - most are only worth their face value unless they are in premium grade. One of the first 50 cent piece designs that many people notice in their change are the fifty cent coins struck for the Centenary of Federation - there is one for each state and territory.
These coins were struck in abundance, with a mintage of over 25 million pieces. However, a few examples of 1977 50 Cents coinage later surfaced bearing the non-commemorative Australia coat of arms design used for previous and subsequent years.
Australia's rarest one dollar coin is the 2000 $1/10c mule - this is the one to look for! A few years ago, a mint condition example sold at auction for more than $10,000.
These coins are high-mintage items. The HH on them does not make them a rarity and between them, nearly 200 million examples were produced between 1988 and 1989. It is amazing that people still think these coins are valuable and this is the result of some articles that have been published that are absolute nonsense.
'It's purely down for people's attraction to the $2 Mars coin. To see its value increase nearly 30-fold in five years is beyond ridiculous,' Mr Kandiah said.
The 1966 wavy baseline 20c is still the most sought after rare Australian 20c coin.
“The 2012 red poppy currently has a value of $180,” Joel said. “Due to its high value, people have been trying to make imitations and sell them on the market.” Showing a fake version of the “rare” coin, Joel pointed out the unusual feature of the red poppy.
Now within the penny series, there are six dates that stand out for their rarity ... 1925, 1930, 1931, 1937, 1945 and 1946. Of these six dates the 1930, 1937 and 1945 Pennies are regarded as elite coins.

The 2012 Red Poppy, 2013 Coronation and 2014 Green Dove coins also have value due to the fact that they were the earliest coins released. This means that as collectors have come along and started collecting coloured $2 coins, they have been forced to buy the harder-to-find ones.
“It has a lower mintage than the most valuable coloured $2 coin, the Mars $2 coin from the 2018 Planetary Series collection, which is currently valued at around $4,000.”
Other auctions have the $2 pieces ranging from $5 to $20, while double rolls of the uncirculated coins are priced at $175. However TikTok money expert TheHistoryOfMoney, known as Joelo, is adamant the coins are only worth $2.

Some one dollar notes are very valuable if they have the right serial numbers or if they're in mint condition. The rarest Australian dollar note can sell for up to $7,500. Although Australians use one dollar coins today, 1 dollar notes are still incredibly popular with collectors decades after they were replaced.
Due to the low mintage, the 1972 five cent coin is very sought after (even in used condition) and can be worth over $100 in mint condition. Another scarce Australian five cent coin is the 2016 Decimal Currency commemorative - it has an easily-identifiable design on the tails side.
A really interesting error on a 1977 50 cent. It looks like it was struck through an attached cold shut. The smooth surface of the struck through area indicates a cold shut while the fractured edge shows that the cold shut was probably attached.
The coin is the silver 50c coin released for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, which was initially sold for $12.50. Following the Queen's death, the numismatist said the coin is now valued at $100.
