Fluid buildup, eye trauma, medications, and other eye conditions are all potential causes of an increase in eye pressure. Typically, one of the keys to reducing it is treating the root cause. It's important to remember that higher-than-normal pressure doesn't guarantee severe problems.
But not everyone with high eye pressure will develop glaucoma — and some people with normal eye pressure get glaucoma. Whether you develop glaucoma depends on the amount of pressure your optic nerve can handle — and this amount is different for each person. For most people, eye pressure above 21 is higher than normal.
Having high pressure inside your eye can heighten your risk of developing permanent nerve damage. High eye pressure increases your risk for developing conditions such as optic neuritis and glaucoma. Schedule an appointment with an eye doctor near you to have your eye pressure measured.
Elevated eye pressure happens as the result of a buildup of fluid that flows throughout the inside of the eye. This fluid also is known as the aqueous humor. It usually drains through a tissue located at the angle where the iris and cornea meet. This tissue also is called the trabecular meshwork.
In eyes with IOP in the normal range, some neurophthalmological disorders can mimic and be misdiagnosed as glaucoma. Among them, isquemic and compressive optic neuropathies were the most common conditions whose fundoscopic appearance resembled glaucomatous optic neuropathy.
Symptoms of glaucoma
If you do notice any symptoms, they might include blurred vision, or seeing rainbow-coloured circles around bright lights. Both eyes are usually affected, although it may be worse in 1 eye. Very occasionally, glaucoma can develop suddenly and cause: intense eye pain.
Your eyes undergo changes such as increased intraocular pressure (IOP) when you're stressed or anxious, whether for a short time or on a regular basis.
Prescription eye drops are the most common treatment. They lower the pressure in your eye and prevent damage to your optic nerve. Laser treatment. To lower your eye pressure, doctors can use lasers to help the fluid drain out of your eye.
Interocular pressure which is the pressure in your eyes is greater than 22 mm Hg it is considered higher than normal. This can cause ocular hypertension. While ocular hypertension is not an eye disease in itself, it is an indication that you could develop glaucoma (see symptoms).
In general, pressures of 20-30 mm Hg usually cause damage over several years, but pressures of 40-50 mm Hg can cause rapid visual loss and also precipitate retinovascular occlusion.
Those who have no sign of nerve damage at the back of the eye, despite raised eye pressure and open drainage angles, are referred to as having "ocular hypertension" or being "Glaucoma suspects".
Doctors know that increased blood pressure results in increased eye pressure, possibly because high blood pressure increases the amount of fluid the eye produces and/or affects the eye's drainage system.
These results suggest that not only is glaucoma a risk factor for anxiety/depression, but also that anxiety/depression could be a risk factor for glaucoma. The rate of VF progression was not significantly different between the low and high groups for either anxiety or depression.

They observed a mean IOP increase of 1.0 mm Hg (right eye, P =. 003) and 1.1 mm Hg (left eye, P =. 004) when comparing IOP measurements obtained during the DTC and immediately after TSST.
Reductions in IOP were found to increase with the duration of walking, jogging and running. IOP measured after both isometric and isokinetic exercise was found to be lower than pre-exercise IOP.
Fluid drainage failure causes the high pressure. Your eyes constantly make a clear fluid called aqueous humor that flows in front of your eye and then drains out. Normally, an equal amount goes in and out. If the fluid doesn't leave your eye when it should, your IOP increases.
Regular exercise may reduce eye pressure. Talk to your health care provider about an appropriate exercise program. Limit your caffeine. Drinking beverages with large amounts of caffeine may increase your eye pressure.
Eye problems can also occur when a brain tumor exerts pressure on the optic nerve or when pressure within the skull causes the back of the eye (optic disc) to swell (a condition known as “papilledema”).
The eye pain can be severe, and may cause headache, and even nausea or vomiting. In an acute angle-closure glaucoma attack, the eye pressure rises rapidly, causing pain, and also causes the cornea to become cloudy, thus patients also notice their vision has decreased.
