A baby's genetic sex is established at conception, based on the sex chromosomes. The mother's egg contains an X chromosome, and the father's sperm contains either an X or a Y chromosome. A baby who inherits the X chromosome from the father is a genetic female (two X chromosomes).

A man's X and a woman's X combine to become a girl, and a man's Y combines with a woman's X to become a boy. But if the sperm don't have equal Xs and Ys, or if other genetic factors are at play, it can affect the sex ratio.

The only true way to select the sex of your baby is by undergoing IVF with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). IVF is a reproductive treatment in which eggs are fertilized by sperm in a laboratory. When the egg is fertilized, it is called an embryo.

Developed by Elizabeth Whelan, this method revolves around the times when a woman's body is more favorable to either the X-sperm or the Y-sperm based on her menstrual cycle. For a girl, a couple should have sex two or three days before ovulation or on the day of ovulation to increase their odds of having a girl.
If the sperm that fertilizes a woman's egg is X, then she'll have a girl. If the fertilizing sperm contains a Y chromosome, then the baby will be a boy.
