Don't go crazy plucking grey hairs. If you have thinning brows, you want to keep all the hairs you can. Plucking the hair just removes the grey temporarily until another grey hair grows back in its place. If you're plagued by bushy brows, brush or comb hairs upwards and carefully trim above the brow line only.
The TLDR of it all is to choose brow products that are slightly lighter and slighter cooler than the color of your natural eyebrow hairs. If you have naturally dense and/or dark brows, you'll have more leeway to pack on more product.
Dark brows were shown to make a person look younger in a study that was published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology because humans appear to (subconsciously) correlate distinct contrasts in facial features with youth.
As we age, our hair can lose color pigment and become lighter or even white! When this happens to our brows, it can cause us to appear older than we actually are. If you have lighter brow hairs or grey, coloring your brows is the best way to give them a youthful boost.
With the above in mind when considering whether your eyebrows should be lighter or darker, I'd suggest the main rule of thumb is… “…to have your brows similar to your hair colour! You can't go wrong! If you wish to go for a slightly different colour, I'd recommend only 1-2 shades darker or lighter!”
But when it comes to hair colour and eyebrows, they are mostly the same colour. It might differ when you colour your hair, tint your eyebrows or there is natural fading of pigments due to ageing (since eyebrows grey slower than your mane).
Also remember that your eyebrow pencil shade should be a wee bit lighter than the actual brow colour since the oils in your skin often oxidise the pigment and make it darker.
Head hair doesn't change colour all at once, but many men have grey hair when their eyebrows are still dark. All kinds of body hairs change colour when ageing hair follicles stop producing the pigment melanin that makes hair dark.
A brow tint is the best solution as it lasts for six weeks and evens out the colour. If you can't get to a salon, brow products really help. A good gel with a tint is the best to cover sneaky greys. The BBBLondon Tinted Brow Gel is my favourite and also slicks your brows into place without being too stiff.
YOUR BROWS SHOULD BE DARKER
We hate to break it to you, but if you thought that your brows should perfectly match your hair, you might want to think again. In fact, your eyebrows should actually be darker than your hair color—unless your tresses are pitch black. This is what looks the most natural.
Define your brows with grey brow pencils to accentuate and frame your face for a more youthful look. *New Softer Formula* Easy to apply. Waterproof and Smudgeproof Formula: for eyebrows that last all day! You're going places and your makeup should go with you.
If you're drastically changing your hair colour, you can tint your brows. Speak to your hairdresser to mix a custom colour. Don't try this at home!
But, as these striking celebs prove, blonde can look really good with dark eyebrows. But why should you break this age-old beauty rule? Well, light-coloured hair paired with fair brows can sometimes leave a lady looking a little washed out.
Eyebrow color is one of the most recognizable visual traits of the human body. It has a strong correlation with hair color, but scientists believe in the existence of overlapping and unique genetic components for both traits.
The golden rule is to go for a brow shape opposite to your face shape. For example, if you've got a long face you should go for a low-lying arch and straight, elongated brows to add width to your face.
Tinting enhances your brows, at least temporarily (it lasts about a month—and even up to six weeks if you're lucky). It gives brows a more natural look (versus using a makeup pencil to fill brows). To add to our previous point, tinting your brows allows you to go more minimal on your makeup bag.
When it comes to filling in your eyebrows, using a shade that's too dark—even just slightly—can really come off as unnatural. Instead, use a shade slightly lighter than your natural eyebrows. Trust us, it will look much more natural and help keep your brows from appearing drawn on—even if they are.
The trick to really natural looking brows is blending, blending, blending. Fill in sparse areas where needed then take a spoolie and brush color into brows over and over again. The more blended-in, the more natural-looking.
"Softer, fuller brows tend to look younger and give the face a more relaxed vibe. Thinner brows can throw off the facial balance and look pinched," he explains.
