Doppelgängers, also known as Shadow Selves or Mortal Shadow Selves, were a supernatural occurrence that were created by Nature. After Silas and Amara became true immortals by consuming Qetsiyah's immortality elixir, they violated the natural law that all living things must die.
The real curse was the hybrid curse: a curse placed on Klaus, an original vampire, to keep his werewolf side dormant. To break the curse, Klaus needed to sacrifice a werewolf, a vampire, and a doppelgänger, aka Elena. Thanks to some clever plot maneuvering, Elena lived to see another day after the curse was broken.

The Doppelgangers are Born
Over centuries, identical versions of Silas and Amara have been born and drawn to each other. The Travelers' leader, Markos, casts a spell on the two bloodlines of the doppelgangers to always find each other.
Tatia is the first doppelgänger of Amara, while Elena is the last. Both were killed by being drained of blood, by a Mikaelson brother—Elena was killed by Klaus while Tatia was killed by Elijah.
The Hybrid Curse was a curse placed on Niklaus Mikaelson by his mother, Esther, in an attempt to keep his werewolf side dormant and limit his power to that of an Original Vampire.
Their immortality had violated Nature's law that all living things must die, and so the doppelgängers came to exist as versions of Silas, Amara, and Ismene that could die.
Doppelganger, also known as Deathvoid, is a Demon composed of shadow that takes the same shape of his foes by refracting light in various directions. He is encountered as a boss in Devil May Cry 3 and Devil May Cry HD Collection.

On the night of the full moon, Klaus had Greta take Elena to the quarry in order to begin the sacrifice ritual. The final act of the sacrifice was to feed on the doppelgänger to her death. It is revealed that Elena is a Petrova Doppelgänger(like Katherine and Nadia), which is thus responsible for her being identical to her ancestor, Katherine Pierce (née Katerina Petrova). This also has the implication of making her a supernatural creature.
