1 In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. 2 He had seven sons and three daughters, 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants.
God restored Job's fortune with “14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys” (Job 42:12). God restored Job's family with seven sons, three daughters, and four generations of grandchildren (Job 42:13-16). “And Job died, an old man, and full of days” (Job 42:17).
The Qur'an says that it was then that God removed his pain and suffering and He returned Job's family to him, blessed him with many generations of descendants and granted him great wealth.
The Talmud mentions him as one of the three Prophets consulted by Pharaoh prior to his decision to drown the Hebrew baby boys (Exodus). Balaam tells him to kill the Jews, Yithro to spare them and Job who does not agree with the plan says nothing. The Talmud concludes that it was for this reason that Job was punished.
Job 1:1-3 reveals he was blameless, upright—he shunned evil and feared God. A successful businessman, he had ten children and owned a great deal of livestock. He was so wealthy, he “was the greatest of all the people of the East.”
Job is a wealthy man living in a land called Uz with his large family and extensive flocks. He is “blameless” and “upright,” always careful to avoid doing evil (1:1). One day, Satan (“the Adversary”) appears before God in heaven.
As an adult, Job became very wealthy. In particular Job's wealth was measured in his vast flocks, spread all throughout the land, in addition to his numerous servants. Job's wealth was so immense that he was considered the richest man in all of Mesopotamia.
The story of Job exemplifies our struggle to understand the problem of suffering. Job was upright and unwavering in his commitment to God, yet he loses everything—his children, his wealth, and eventually his health. For some of us, his experience of suffering resonates profoundly.
This legend concerns Job, a prosperous man of outstanding piety. Satan acts as an agent provocateur to test whether or not Job's piety is rooted merely in his prosperity. But faced with the appalling loss of his possessions, his children, and finally his own health, Job still refuses to curse God.
The point seems to be this: Job claimed that God has fallen asleep at the wheel in running the universe, and because of this divine neglect he's had to endure unjust suffering.
“Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him,” Job 13:15. And the Lord not only restored Job's fortunes, he restored them in abundance. This promise of abundance is found throughout the Bible.
He feels that it would have been better not to have lived than to experience the pain and sorrow of his life. “Why did I come out from the womb to see toil and sorrow, and spend my days in shame?” (20:18). If he had known that life was like this, he would rather not have been born.
Job tells her that they must be left and she takes herself off to lie amongst the cattle where she dies. Only after her death does she receive honour as the city laments her death.
The life of Job, a man whose story is told in the book of the Bible by that name, contains many lessons for us today. In it, we see the value of patience, perseverance, and the importance of holding our tongue, not to mention God's faithfulness, restorative power, and goodness.
Job was a righteous man. As the author says on more than one occasion, he was “blameless and upright, a man who feared God and turned away from evil.” He was also a wealthy man. He had 7,000 sheep and 3,000 camels; he had 500 donkeys, 500 yoke of oxen; he had 7 sons, and 3 daughters.

In the end, God restored all that Job had lost, and gave Job twice as much as he had before. The Lord blessed him with a long life, and with seven more sons, and three more daughters who were the most beautiful women in all the land!
What is the moral of the story of Job in the Bible? The moral of the story is that people must have faith in God even in adversity. People cannot know everything happening in the universe and therefore cannot know why certain things happen.
He had acted and moved based upon a paradigm of his own creation, but now desires to move based upon God's own revelation. His repentance is for the assumption that he had fully understood how God must act and respond in the case of his suffering.

In all of this, the Bible says, Job did not sin with his lips. Job was reduced to sitting amidst the rubble of his once-prosperous life.
