The sisters began experimenting with alcohol, drugs and boys, and in 1981, were arrested and held on remand for petty theft, vandalism and arson. The following year they were sent to Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital in Berkshire, where they remained until 1993.
For years, they spoke only to one another and, as teenagers, committed a variety of crimes including vandalism, petty theft and arson resulting in them being institutionalised indefinitely. They spent 11 years in Broadmoor.
It was only later that it emerged that the girls weren't shy, or backward, but had made a decision not to communicate. 'We made a pact,' June explained in an interview after her sister's death. 'We said we weren't going to speak to anybody.
In March 1993, the twins were transferred from Broadmoor to the more open Caswell Clinic in Bridgend, Wales. On arrival Jennifer could not be roused. She was taken to the hospital where she died soon after of acute myocarditis, a sudden inflammation of the heart. There was no evidence of drugs or poison in her system.
