A standard round of golf consists of 18 holes, and as such most courses contain 18 distinct holes; however, there are many 9-hole courses and some that have holes with shared fairways or greens. There are also courses with a non-standard number of holes, such as 12 or 14.
So, why is golf 18 holes? The story of why golf is 18 holes dates back to 1764 when golfers at St Andrew decided to combine the first four short holes into two, producing a total round of 18 holes. Although it still had 10 holes, with 8 of the holes played twice, it would mark the beginning of 18 holes in golf.
When we say that you're an average golfer, we mean “average” according to the numbers: a 15-handicap, destined to take around 90 shots over 18 holes. As an average golfer, you drive it an average of 208 yards (that's according to a 2017 USGA study).
A typical 18-hole golf course will have a total par around 72, and a 9-hole par-3 course (where all holes are rated as par 3) will have a total par of 27.
How many strokes higher than those numbers did it take a golfer to finish 18 holes? That's his score over-par. For example, if a golfer finishes a par-72 golf course with a score of 90, she is 18-over par. On a par-70 golf course, 1-over-par is 71, 5-over-par is 75 and 10-over par is 80.
Under par means the golfer scores a number of strokes into the hole, less than the number stipulated on the scorecard. The names for these scores are birdie, eagle and albatross. On a par 4, that would be 3 or fewer strokes. On a par 5, that would be 4 or fewer strokes.
If you play 18 holes and make a double bogey on every hole your score on most courses will be 108, just 9 shots over where you want to be. On a typical 18-hole championship course, the par is 72, and a score of 99 equates to 27 over par.
On the PGA tour, professional golfers take around 10 minutes per hole. This averages out to around 3-4.5 hours for an 18-hole round.
MAXIMUM STROKES (PER HOLE) The Rules of Golf do not limit the number of strokes a player may take on any one hole. If it requires seventeen (17) strokes to hole out (including penalty strokes) then your score for that hole is "17". In sanctioned tournament play, such scores can occur, albeit rarely.
Birdie: In the 19th century, the term “bird” was the equivalent of “cool” or “excellent” – golf scholars believe this is where the term came from. An Atlantic City, New Jersey, course claims that the term originated there in 1903. The meaning being a score of one under par.
Hole No. 13 at Augusta National Golf Club is the first par-5 on the back nine and the last of the three holes that comprise "Amen Corner." It is a birdie hole and one of two great eagle opportunities (along with the 15th hole) for Masters Tournament golfers on the back nine.
When you see “Scotch” in the name of a golf format, it likely refers to “alternate shot.” It's an indication that the format is entirely or partially alternate shot.
Golf is very commonly associated with 18-hole rounds, and while most golf courses do offer 9-hole options, most golf groups and golfers will choose to play 18 and dedicate an entire day or afternoon to their round.
The answer to how long a round of golf takes varies but an average round is 4 hours and 30 minutes. 9 holes will take about half that. A round of golf longer than 4.5 hours is considered slow day and often happens. A shorter round of golf means a good pace of play.
A golf course's finishing hole is straightforward: it's the last hole on the course. The hole where the golf course finishes. If Podunk National Golf Club is an 18-hole golf course, then the 18th hole is the finishing hole.
But no one is ever going to birdie 18 holes. In the perfect game you reach the green in the fewest possible number of strokes and hole your first putt. If you can reach the green in two strokes, then the second shot should go in the cup. It will never be played.
It was also found that the best years for a golf professional are between 30 and 35, although plenty of tour players have shown they can still win tournaments in their 40s.
The PGA Tour's minimum age limit is 18, a rule that was established after Ty Tryon and Kevin Na turned pro as 17-year-olds in 2001.
What is your handicap if you shoot 100? If you shoot around 100 for 18 holes, your handicap is roughly a 28 (100-72 = 28).
3.1a Before a Handicap Index Has Been Established
For a player submitting their first scores to obtain an initial Handicap Index, the maximum score for each hole played is limited to par + 5 strokes (see Diagram 3.1a).
What is my maximum hole score for handicap posting purposes? A. If you have an established Handicap Index®, the maximum score for each hole played is limited to a net double bogey, equal to double bogey plus any handicap strokes you are entitled to receive based on your Course Handicap™.
What is an ostrich in golf? An ostrich is, according to golf lore, the score assigned to scoring five below par on a hole. On most traditional golf courses, this is not possible, as the lowest score possible on a par five is four under the assigned par.
What is a good golf handicap? A good golf handicap is ten or less. With a handicap index of ten or less, you will generally shoot somewhere around 82. Shooing in the low 80s is better than average but certainly not good enough to be considered a scratch player.
Bogey - A "Bogey" is when a golfer scores one stroke OVER par. While a bogey is a bad result for a low handicap or professional golfer, new and less skilled golfers are often fine with only needing one more stroke than par to complete a hole. If you got a bogey on every hole of a par-72 course, you'd shoot a 90.
