A flashback is a vivid experience in which you relive some aspects of a traumatic event or feel as if it is happening right now. This can sometimes be like watching a video of what happened, but flashbacks do not necessarily involve seeing images, or reliving events from start to finish.
Flashbacks sometimes feel as though they come out of nowhere, but there are often early physical or emotional warning signs. These signs could include a change in mood, feeling pressure in your chest, or suddenly sweating. Becoming aware of the early signs of flashbacks may help you manage or prevent them.
To the person watching this PTSD flashback, it can look random and completely unmotivated. The person experiencing the flashback can look like his or her actions are “crazy”, when this isn't the case at all. What the person is really doing is experiencing a severe mental illness symptom.
If you have complex PTSD you may be particularly likely to experience what some people call an 'emotional flashback', in which you have intense feelings that you originally felt during the trauma, such as fear, shame, sadness or despair.
After the threat has passed
Later on, if you encounter things that remind you of the traumatic event, like a smell that was present when it happened, your amygdala will retrieve that memory and respond strongly — signaling that you are in danger and automatically activating your fight-or-flight system.
Some people experience PTSD flashbacks as a type of dissociation. This mental state causes you to feel disconnected from your thoughts, emotions, memory, or identity. You might feel like you're in a movie or have no recognition of where you actually are.
Symptoms of complex PTSD
avoiding situations that remind a person of the trauma. dizziness or nausea when remembering the trauma. hyperarousal, which means being in a continual state of high alert. the belief that the world is a dangerous place.
Presence of one (or more) of the following symptoms of intrusion associated with the traumatic event: Recurrent, intrusive distressing memories of the traumatic event. Recurrent distressing dreams about the event. Flashbacks in which the person feels or acts as if the traumatic event is recurring.
Re-experiencing is the most typical symptom of PTSD. This is when a person involuntarily and vividly relives the traumatic event in the form of: flashbacks. nightmares.
When considering how long flashbacks last, a small survey of those with PTSD indicates that flashbacks last: A few minutes – 61.5% A few hours – 40.4% A day or more – 28.9%
Someone may become extremely upset and have a normal, healthy emotional reaction when a certain memory is triggered. They will likely be able to speak and respond, even if only minimally. They may or may not want to talk about it, but they will likely be able to express their needs.

Potential triggers of a PTSD flashback
Some common flashback triggers can include: Walking or driving near the location the event occurred. Seeing someone who reminds you of your abuser. Watching a show or a movie that brings up memories of the traumatic event.
Person seems disoriented. Frozen, wide-eyed stare, clenched or fluttering eyes. Inability to make eye contact. Dysregulated, uncontrollable flood of emotions, such as crying, screaming, shaking (panic)
People with PTSD have intense, disturbing thoughts and feelings related to their experience that last long after the traumatic event has ended. They may relive the event through flashbacks or nightmares; they may feel sadness, fear or anger; and they may feel detached or estranged from other people.
Flooding, sometimes referred to as in vivo exposure therapy, is a form of behavior therapy and desensitization—or exposure therapy—based on the principles of respondent conditioning. As a psychotherapeutic technique, it is used to treat phobia and anxiety disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder.
Symptoms of Dissociation
“Blanking out” or being unable to remember anything for a period of time. Experiencing a distorted or blurred sense of reality. Feeling disconnected or detached from your emotions. Feeling like you're briefly losing touch with events going on around you, similar to daydreaming.
During a somatic flashback someone may see complete or partial images from the event. The person experiencing the flashback may hear sounds associated with the event. They may experience physical sensations that took place, e.g. sweating, racing heartbeat, pain. Sudden and unexpected onset.
Triggers can include sights, sounds, smells, or thoughts that remind you of the traumatic event in some way. Some PTSD triggers are obvious, such as seeing a news report of an assault. Others are less clear. For example, if you were attacked on a sunny day, seeing a bright blue sky might make you upset.
Emotional Trauma Symptoms
Psychological Concerns: Anxiety and panic attacks, fear, anger, irritability, obsessions and compulsions, shock and disbelief, emotional numbing and detachment, depression, shame and guilt (especially if the person dealing with the trauma survived while others didn't)
For example, if you feel intense fear and freeze up, a deep breathing exercise can help calm your reaction. Other coping strategies may also be helpful: Perform relaxation techniques, such as breathing exercises, meditation, muscle relaxation exercises, listening to soothing music, or getting in touch with nature.
