Your contractions may decrease just prior to getting the urge to push. You should take this time to rest prior to pushing. The length of this stage varies with the position and size of the baby and your ability to push with the contractions. For first-time mothers the average length of pushing is one-to-two hours.
Use Your Contractions as Your Guide
If you don't have an epidural you'll be able to feel the contraction nearing. As your contraction builds, take some deep breaths. Then as it peaks, push, push, push! Some labor coaches recommend holding your breath.
Pushing Can Feel Like Relief
Your baby's head may press on nerves that desensitize the pelvis, and many people report feeling a numb sensation before the "ring of fire" (when the baby's head begins to emerge from the vaginal opening, a stage known as "crowning"). Some even say it feels good, similar to orgasm.
What does pushing feel like? Many women described pushing during labor as a relief, while others found it painful. "There is a ton of pressure, and once you start pushing it hurts so bad to stop." "My contractions were manageable but the rectal pressure was intense!
Transition to the second stage of labor

Most women find the most painful part of labor and delivery to be the contractions, while some others may feel pushing or post-delivery is most painful. Pain during labor and delivery may also be caused by pressure on the bladder and bowels by the baby's head and the stretching of the birth canal and vagina.
While slightly more than half said having contractions was the most painful aspect of delivery, about one in five noted pushing or post-delivery was most painful. Moms 18 to 39 were more likely to say post-delivery pain was the most painful aspect than those 40 and older.
Transition phase of labor
The end of active labor is sometimes referred to as the transition to the second stage of labor. It's when the cervix completely dilates to a full 10 centimeters, and is the shortest – but generally considered the hardest – part of labor.
The potential for a quicker labor, delivery and recovery – For some people, a natural birth may go more quickly. While it depends on several different factors, like how relaxed you may be, in some cases medications can interfere with contractions and prolong labor.

Yet for those who choose to forgo the epidural, or cannot receive an epidural for medical reasons, there are plenty of ways to reduce the feeling of contractions. Women who do not use an epidural usually take advantage of a myriad of coping techniques which function similarly to a “natural epidural.”
An epidural is a great tool to use during labor if you need rest and/or relief from contractions. But epidurals can make movement slightly more challenging during labor and while pushing. We can still move, but we may need more support, and depending on the density of the epidural, we may be limited on movements.
But if you're close to 10 centimeters dilated the research suggests it's not an issue. Evidence suggests it's more of a theoretical fear that just adds additional stress and in some cases results in an epidural (or a higher dose of epidural) to mask that urge.
You may feel pressure and the urge to push. Your doctor or midwife will let you know when to start pushing. How Long It Will Last: On average this stage can last 1 ½ to 2 hours with your first baby. However, you only push when you are having a contraction and you can rest in between.

Fainting during labor is extremely rare. Nature created the female body in such a way that it mobilizes all its forces when giving birth to a baby. Passing out is not a typical reaction of a woman's body to childbirth. If you are prone to fainting, you should inform the doctor in advance.

Most people don't feel anything, especially if you are already in labor or got an epidural to manage painful contractions. Your baby also doesn't feel an amniotomy, and it doesn't hurt them in any way. People who haven't taken any pain medication may feel slight discomfort when the amnihook is inserted.
Squatting is a great way to give birth, as it enlarges the pelvic opening and gives gravity an opportunity to help the process. In order to squat during childbirth, keep your knees wide and feet flat and parallel to each other. Use your partner, care team, doula or a birthing bar to support you as you push.
