Research suggests that having a longer ring finger compared to index finger reflects greater exposure to male hormones during an individual's time in their mother's womb. There are differences between and within sexes in finger lengths associated with relatively more masculine versus feminine development.
When it comes to sexual attraction, it turns out that men might better be concerned with the length of their fourth (or ring) fingers than the length of anything else. Researchers have discovered that women tend to be more attracted to men whose ring fingers are longer than their index fingers.
Finger length ratio (2D:4D) is a sexually dimorphic trait. Men have relatively shorter second digits (index fingers) than fourth digits (ring fingers). Smaller, more masculine, digit ratios are thought to be associated with either higher prenatal testosterone levels or greater sensitivity to androgens, or both.
Hormones are thought to influence finger length ratio. Some scientists believe the amount of estrogen and testosterone we're exposed to in our mothers' wombs can influence which digit is longer than the other. Higher testosterone exposure may be linked to a slightly longer ring finger.
The longer a man's fourth or ring finger is compared to his index finger, the more likely he is to be judged attractive by women, according to a study released Wednesday.
Previous research has found that this "2D:4D" ratio — the ratio of the length of the second digit (the index finger) to that of the fourth digit (the ring finger) — reveals the amount of male hormones, mainly testosterone, a person is exposed to in the womb. The more testosterone, the longer the ring finger grows.
In the ring digit, testosterone stimulates cell division, building up cartilage and bone to make the digit longer. Estrogen, on the other hand, slows down cell division, leading to a shorter digit.
Men with shorter index fingers are more likely to pick fights. Women with the same hand shape are more likely to react with aggression after being provoked. Men who experience a higher surge of prenatal testosterone, and thus have longer ring fingers, tend to be risk takers.
It turns out that most people have slightly longer ring fingers than index fingers, and in men the difference is a bit larger. If the ringer finger is longer, than the 2D:4D ratio is less than one. One recent study reported that this ratio was 0.947 in men and 0.965 in women.
Little finger
In addition, the small ring worn on this finger features the most attractive and gorgeous designs, and it is often the first declarator to shine. The little finger also represents wisdom and persuasion in astrology, often associated with intelligence, insight, and coercion.
While putting engagement/wedding rings on the left ring finger is common in western culture, in some countries like India, Spain, Norway, Japan, and Russia, it's the other way round. As per their cultural traditions and norms, they wear marriage or engagement rings on their right ring finger.
Ring finger – relationship status – this is where your wedding band goes. Middle finger – individuality – communicates order and purpose. Index finger – allegiance – leadership and ambition – mainly used for membership rings. Thumb – strength of character – shows willpower and freedom of thought.
After years, fingers and/or knuckles usually get bigger. It's best to have your ring resized while you can still take it off.
Correlation between finger length and stature was highly significant. Pearson correlation between finger length and stature was higher among females than males. The findings of present study indicate that index finger and ring finger lengths can be used to predict living stature of an individual [4,5].
Specifically in the neck/shoulder region, it has been shown that women have weaker and smaller necks compared to men of similar height [15] , have a lower strength and 45 % less muscle cross-sectional area in the biceps brachii [16] and have a different shape and anatomy of glenoid fossa [17] .
Studies have noted that men with longer ring fingers usually are approachable and agreeable. Key Personality Traits: Calculative, pragmatic, rational, resilient, high IQ, high emotional intelligence, playful, addictive.
The fourth finger of the left hand, believed to possess a vein that runs securely to the heart, has traditionally been ringed. This Vein of Love, or more amorously called the Vena Amoris, 1 originated in ancient Egypt, where it was first described by Macrobius in 395–423 AD.
Those with irregular or rounder-shaped palms and short fingers are fiery, extrovert and need to be centre of attention. They tend to be action takers who get everyone started. Those with tall, rectangular palms and long fingers need to rationalise, understand and analyse. Sometimes they can be aloof and critical.
Or, they think it has something to do with their shoe size. Yes, size 10.0 shoes are the most common for men and so are size 10.0 rings, but that's just a coincidence. Your ring size most likely is not the same as your shoe size.
The average ring size for men is a size 9.25, or between 8.75 and 11.5. Sizing is pretty straightforward and below are the different men's ring sizes which are commonly used.
Among the celebrities with longer ring fingers are Hollywood heart-throbs Sir Sean Connery, Brad Pitt and Colin Firth. A longer ring finger isn't the only side-effect of extra testosterone exposure. Others include being more muscly and athletic, having more powerful grips regardless and better spatial abilities.
Signs and symptoms of high testosterone in men
Excess testosterone can lead to more aggressive and irritable behavior, more acne and oily skin, even worse sleep apnea (if you already have it), and an increase in muscle mass.
A longer ring finger is a marker of higher levels of testosterone, whereas a longer index finger is a marker of higher levels of oestrogen. Generally, men have longer ring fingers, whereas women have longer index fingers.
A blood sample for a testosterone test should be taken in the morning between 7 and 10. During these hours, your testosterone levels are typically the highest. A health care professional will take a blood sample from a vein in your arm, using a small needle.
However, a good rule of thumb is that a ring should be tight enough that it doesn't easily fall off but loose enough that you can still comfortably move your finger. If you are struggling to move your fingers, then it's likely too tight.
